Poet and Activist Maya Angelou once said, “let faith be the bridge that you build to overcome evil and welcome good”.
I came across this quote the other day, and thought to myself… “That’s what I want to do”.
Really and truly, this is what I aspire to do. To let faith and hope guide me… but sometimes it can be hard. It can be difficult on a macro-level by looking at the strife and discord in the world around us and feeling helpless to change it, in even little ways. Or on a micro-level, the difficulties can be more personal for us, our daily struggles, problems or complaints.
Although, aspiring to do things and acting out of those aspirations are often easier said than done. Sometimes its easier to look towards a distance and place blame on everything else for your attitude or your viewpoint of life. It’s easy to do. The only problem is, it also tears you in two. By looking towards a distance, I mean only tend to focus on the past or the present. Looking towards a distance means that you can be torn between grudges and forgiveness. Refusing to look and deal with our present circumstances.
I want to live by faith, or as I have previously written about living by an anchor. To be anchored in a way that I am not overwhelmed with the weight of the world but rather have a tether of my soul that I look towards for comfort.
Now you may be thinking right now, “All this sounds good, but do you have an actual solution for this?”.
I’ll be honest, as a young adult, I’m still learning myself and don’t have a tried and true path or wisdom to advise with.
But after reading through some of Maya Angelou’s wise and profound poetry, I found a quote that may help, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style”.
With a little a faith in our heart even the size of a mustard seed and a little hope in our step, it’s our time, so, let’s thrive.
