An Open Letter To Judge Aaron Persky

To the man who allowed a guilty coward to roam free

An Open Letter To Judge Aaron Persky

You don’t know me, and I hope you never do.

Lucky for you, you have been assigned to one of the more monumental modern day cases. One that everyone has heard about since January of 2015. One that will change the way the twenty first generation will perceive rape for the rest of their lives. As a part of the up and coming generation, I want to dedicate this letter to you; not the rapist himself.

Brock Turner, a name buzzing around households all over the country, has become famous and it’s all thanks to you. After physically assaulting a 23 year old unconscious female behind a dumpster and doing everything in his and his wealthy family’s power to get out of it, you are the person who is ultimately responsible for his uncanny sentence. For a boy facing up to 14 years in prison (not just a county jail), I’d say you treated him pretty well considering he is currently free after just 3 months in county jail.

county jail.

For a man who previously claimed to be working "to keep the most dangerous sex offenders in custody in mental hospitals", I personally can’t see how your actions and your words match up. An innocent woman, one who was simply going out with friends, unintentionally consumed too much alcohol, and unwillingly became a rape victum, has been striped of so much more than this rapist will ever have in his lifetime. And you are the one wedged in the middle of it.

You claimed in an interview that "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him. I think he will not be a danger to others". How do you figure? This coward has already robbed a woman of so much simply because she was convenient. Have you not thought of how this rapist has harmed the woman he has stolen from?

Your decision to release a guilty man has fed directly into the debates on women’s rights and the treatment of white middle classed men in the legal system. I can’t help but wonder what your thoughts on this are and hope that you don’t have a daughter, niece, godchild, etc. that you can fathom this happening to.

Sadly, you are still sitting on California’s Judicial Bench even after over 650,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org for your ouster. And although many your colleagues strongly disagree with your decision in the People vs. Turner case, it is very likely that you will face no repercussions for your monumental decision. You and I both know you did not deserve reelection in the California primary last week, but considering your situation, I hope that for your sake you have found a way to live with your guilt, Judge Persky.

Did you know that this rapist has served less time than a man who incorrectly imported lobster tails? Here's 12 people who have served longer than Brock Turner: http://www.marieclaire.com/culture/news/a20927/longer-sentence-than-brock-turner/ (This does not include Martha Stewart)

Although Brock Turner will forever be a registered sex offender meaning he will never be allowed to live within 1,000 feet of a school, will never swim for a USA team for the rest of his life and will forever be known as “the coward who got away with it”, I hope you and him are the ones unable to sleep at night.

The only thing I can thank you for is revealing the priorities of our judicial system truly is and for sparking this movement.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.

Being a music major is not all kicks and giggles. In fact, there are days when I question my sanity and doubt myself as a musician. I know I am not the only one going through the struggle, and so here are 13 GIFs that I know my fellow music majors can relate to...
