Hey, seniors! I know you’re probably a mix of scared, excited, and relieved to be done with the dreaded Common App. I remember being there too. Here are some tips, from a freshman, about how to handle the wild ride that will be the next year of your life.
First off, try not the stress! So much is going to change so quickly, so just attempt to enjoy the middle ground of uncertainty about what’s going to happen in the future. Enjoy being in high school, being done with applications, getting to cuddle your dog every night, and not having to wear shoes in the shower. These are all things that will be VERY precious to you next year around this time.
Suddenly, it feels like all of your friends know where they’re going to college. The acceptances start rolling in, and before you know it everyone is proudly wearing their new schools' sweatshirts and joining ‘*School Name* Class of 202-‘ group chats. I know this might be hard for you, but try not to be too jealous. Everyone deserves to do this, and your turn will come soon. Be happy for your friends and support them, because getting in is arguably the easy part.
Next, you hear back from YOUR colleges, and best-case scenario get into your dream school…but what if you don’t? Rejection is hard. But just have faith that things will get better. All this stress you’re feeling is going to melt away when everything works out, and I promise you – everything will work out. Everyone’s college admissions experience is different, so if things don’t go your way, have faith that there’s a good reason for it.
Finally, you make your decision about where you’ll be for the next 4 years! So exciting, right? But the anxiety starts kicking in right after the rush of relief that you’re in. Try not the second guess yourself too much. Like I said, everything will work out, and nothing is permanent.
Enjoy joining those group chats (even though they’re overwhelming), and have faith that you made the right choice. Start preparing yourself for the change by taking little steps to alleviate the stress – don’t overwhelm yourself with all the preparations at once!
Also, most importantly, say thank you’s. Thank your parents, teachers, friends – show everyone how much you appreciate them for standing by you and helping you through the process. Having a good support system is everything, especially in times of change, and I’m sure there are people along the way you can partially attribute for your success. Be proud of yourself, and let others be proud of you!
Seniors, good luck! You’re almost there…and I hope you enjoy the ride!
