To Grandparents, From Your College Student Grandchild

I really do love you.

To Grandparents, From Your College Student Grandchild

To my grandparents,

Before I started college, I figured I would be able to juggle all of my responsibilities. These included: completing homework on time, going to class, making sure to eat real food, getting involved, and making time for family. Unfortunately, I slowly realized that I was lacking in the family department. It's definitely easier to see my parents because they are only ten minutes away, but that's not even close to a good excuse.

I'm so sorry that I haven't been able to spent more time with you. I know you would like to see more of me, but college is a lot different from high school, and with that comes a lot more goals that need to be met within a shorter period of time.

However, just know that I will be attending every family holiday get together, so feel free to make all of my favorite foods for those (because at this point my tastebuds are getting used to easy mac and chips, and that's not really a way to live). Don't worry about leftovers, I'll bring containers and stretch out that home cooked food for as long as I can.

And to my only grandparent to pass away,

I'm so sorry I didn't come visit more. I know I lived with you this summer, and that we spent every day together, but I still should've been at the hospital every single day like my mom was. I know that you love me a lot, so just know that I love you too. I'm not saying it past tense because I know you're looking down and shaking your head at every ridiculous thing I do. We never really said that to each other in person because that's just not who we are. But I know you felt it every single time we saw each other.

I hope you know that I really did learn a lot from you. I learned that car shows are the best, and that being behind the camera is better than being in front of it. I learned that peanut butter is a great favorite food, and that sometimes people don't actually deserve second chances. Most importantly, I learned that there will always be someone to love me if I am always myself.

I want you to know that you were and will always be one of my favorite people, and that I miss you every day. I'm so honored that you passed your camera down to me and are allowing me to be the new "memory taker" for the family. Everyone who knew you, knew you as the guy behind the camera, and I can't wait to take on that duty and make you proud.

To all of you,

Just know that all of you have taught me important skills that I will always remember for my future. I love you all equally, and appreciate everything you guys do for me everyday.

With all my love,

Your college student.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
