A Letter To The Future Me

Whether it be me in a few years, 10 years or 20 years the message is still the same.

Dear future me,

I am assuming that time has gone by fast, and you are standing in shock as to how fast it went by. Wherever you are at this moment in time, I hope that the journey to get there was worth it. I hope that every day you are one step closer to making all of your dreams and goals come true.

If you are anything like the me writing this, then I know that you have probably worked hard and have not given up in the slightest bit. Hopefully, you were not too hard on yourself, because we both know that I have a tendency to do that. I cannot predict what you are going through and the happenings of life right now, but here are some things I know I would want to hear.

If you are going through a tough time and have hit a bump in the road, stay strong and positive. You have been through so much stuff in your life, even more than I know now, and you have managed to make it through all of that. You can get through this too, I have no doubts. You are stronger than you know.

If you are facing a big decision, listen to your heart. It may be hard, and I hope your decision-making skills have improved, but I know that you will pick what is right. Go with your gut, don't listen to what anyone else has to say, do what is best for you. At the point in time I am writing this I haven't made any terrible decisions, and I hope that by the time you are reading this the good decision record is intact. But if you have made a bad decision, and you are worried about doing it again, learn to accept the decision and learn from it. Life is too precious to dwell on the past.

If you are going through a positive change, congratulations, I am very happy for you. I am happy that all the hard work is paying off and you are doing good things for yourself. I hope you are proud of yourself and know that your family is very proud of you. You deserve to be happy, and I wish you luck while you go through this process and in any future changes.

If you are working too hard, make sure you take some time to relax for yourself. Don't overwork yourself or get too stressed out, make sure you still know how to take a break. Remember to breathe and do something fun and exciting every once in a while and please, never ever lose your sense of adventure.

Most importantly never lose your sense of self. There is only one you in this world and that is something special to hang on to. Don't let this crazy world take away your values and ideas, and don't be afraid to speak your mind. You can do anything that you put your mind to, and I know that no matter what happens you will do great things.

Much love from the current me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
