7 Things To Do As Southern California Warms Up for Spring

In This Article:

Week after week, I trudged through campus in ill-equipped clothing, forgetting an umbrella on Wednesday and not layering enough on Thursday, and getting home soaking wet on Friday. California experienced a seemingly endless period of rainfall and cold weather, which has dampened the spirit down for many Californians, but at least has led the state out of its lengthy drought.

Now, don't get me wrong! California definitely needs, and deserves, this period of rainfall! I can't tell you how many dried up fountains I've come across for the state's effort to conserve water. However, we're really spoiled with weather here in California, especially in the southern areas where Los Angeles and San Diego are located. The activities listed are very year-round in California, but having rain inhibit its full potential...well, you realize you take a lot of this stuff for granted. So, as spring has sprung around the corner, it's time to soak up the soon and look forward to seven classic southern California activities to look forward to doing again!

Wearing beachwear favorites- little goes a loooong way

Ashley Lanuza

From tank tops and sandals to crop tops and shorts, we love wearing breathable clothing! Southern California is known for the chill vibes, and though not everyone looks like they just came out of the water, we definitely love to wear what's comfy and cool.

Let's go to the beach-each, let's go get away

Ashley Lanuza

How can you wear "beach wear" and not go to the beach?!! Whether you're on the sand for a bronzed tan in Malibu, in the ocean waves to surf your heart out at Huntington Beach, with friends around a bonfire at La Bolsa Chica, or spinning in rides and winning arcade games at the Santa Monica Pier, going to the beach is a must for this weather. There's so much to do for everyone, you sometimes have to let go of the fact that sand will be all over your clothes.

So go ahead, drive out with some summer jams and catch a wave.

Adventure time in downtown Los Angeles!

Ashley Lanuza

Downtown Los Angeles, and the rest of LA county, is set up incredibly far apart, so it isn't the easiest to just take the public transportation system. This is especially counting its limited structure and rush hour traffic that cuts half of your day. However, walking isn't too bad around sections of LA, which includes the downtown area. Soak up the sun by admiring the multitude of buildings and businesses we have around town, and who knows, you'll probably find yourself in a coveted photo-op spot.

Sweet and scrumptious picnics at the park

Ashley Lanuza

Grass is starting to have less rain residue, meaning soil won't stick onto your clothes, so why not take a nap on the earth, read a good book, or have a cute picnic? Grand Park in DTLA typically has activities and events in the summer months, and as you relieve your tired feet by walking barefoot in the fountain, you an also find a bunch of other cool things to do, like grab some coffee or boba in the area the warmer spring/summer gets.

Foodies united: outdoor food fests go rampant

Ashley Lanuza

California's diversity has ushered in an era of die-hard foodies, and Los Angeles is no exception. There's Smorgasburg every Sunday for food stands a-plenty, first Fridays at Venice Beach for food trucks galore, 626 Night Market on select weekends for your Taiwanese night market fix, and the Orange County Fair for the wild and fried! All of these eating experiences typically take place outside, and as the sun warms up, we can sample food in its full glory.

Shop in the sun till ya drop

Ashley Lanuza

Due to its usual year-round sunshine, southern California has multiple outdoor malls to make shopping a breezy leisure in-between store fronts. Some great places to shop or just hang around in the sunshine is the Grove, the Americana, Century City Mall, and the many outlets located closer to Palm Springs and Nevada. Splurge a little, treat yo' self, and have a latte after under the warm breeze.

Up and around the canyons

Ashley Lanuza

With warmer and dryer weather, those in southern California can do a classic morning past-time: hiking! Runyon Canyon, Eaton Canyon, trails near Griffith Park, and so much more trails are ready to be unlocked for its full rays of sunshine. Just don't forget to wear sunscreen and try to go early, as the sun can get really intense during the middle of the day (unless you're into that sort of thing, then by all means!).

Bonus: Poppies!!

Jelene Venturina Cariasa

For the first time in years, California is experiencing a natural growth of the national flower: poppy flowers! Due to the Superbloom at the end of the drought, many people are flocking to the fields to get a glimpse of these gorgeous paintings by nature- and sneak a shot of them in it!

However, please proceed with caution when around the poppies! They are super fragile, especially when human bodies press against them, so keep in mind to stay on the trail!!!

Enjoy the sun, SoCal :)

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
