To College Seniors

"You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go." Dr. Seuss

When people say college will go by fast, they aren’t lying. I feel like I blinked and suddenly college is almost over. Soon graduation will be here and we’ll all be ejected into the real world. Some people are OK with this, but to others the mere thought makes them want to cry. It suddenly hits you that it probably won’t ever be acceptable again to roll out of bed at seven in the morning and put sweatpants on because you’ll have real world responsibilities, and sweatpants won’t cut it. You can still go to the bar and and drink to your heart’s desire, but you’ll probably end up paying for it the next day.

When you first entered college, the world was your oyster. Now you’ve come full circle, and the world seems like a bigger, more intimidating oyster. The pearl is out there but you can’t seem to find it right now. Senior year is the culmination of your academic endeavors. Your left wondering if all your efforts will pay off and help you make it in the real world. Here you are. This is it. You’re teetering on the edge, not sure if you’re ready to jump in.

I know at least, this is how I feel. Your 20s can be hard. You're getting older, but you still feel so young. You’re wading in a deep pond of comparison. Senior year is a muddled mix of doubt, excitement, thrill and every emotion you can fit in between those. There will be very high highs and some pretty low lows. I don’t have everything figured out, and truthfully I don’t think anyone does. Life never gets easier, you just get better at it.

As seniors, we have a lot to be proud of. You might not think you’ve accomplished a lot, but you have. If you asked freshman year me if she believed that she would every do some of the things that I have done, she would have said "never in a million years." You’ve done so many things and you can do some many more. Right now everything seems so vast and uncertain, and that is sort of terrifying. Even if you haven’t done much at all, you’ve made it this far and that, my friend, is something to be damn proud of. As much as college has helped guide you, only you can create your future. Dr. Seuss said it right, "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."

Graduation may be approaching, but know this: you’ll be OK. You have so much to offer the world. Try not to doubt yourself, and believe you can do it. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and in the words of John Waters, “Go out in the world and f*ck it up beautifully.”

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
