To My College Best Friend

"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." - Wicked

To My College Best Friend

To my college best friend,

I'm not really sure the moment we became best friends or even just "friends." Maybe we just clicked, or maybe we just coincidentally started talking to each other, though we were five or so doors down from each other on our floor.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad it happened. I'm glad you were able to stand by me throughout my freshman year. I'm glad that I had someone to ride the train with every morning to class and to get ice cream with every night for weeks on end. I'm glad that each day I went to bed and woke up knowing that I had someone who would support me in all my endeavors, all my crazy plans, and all my hard decisions.

Because of you, I never felt lonely. Moving away from home was hard - for both of us - but we had each other to talk about it to. We had each others' backs and understood the importance of family we had both grown up with.

Because of you, I was never bored. I always had someone to sit and watch Netflix with me for hours, or even someone to go with me to the library for the hours of homework I had. You'd never hesitate to take an extra train ride to go to Chipotle, even though I know it's not your favorite, and go with me to the dining hall even when you definitely weren't hungry.

You're my first text whenever I get a good grade (or a bad one). You're always the first one I want to tell all my exciting news to, and the person I call on whenever I'm bored and just need someone to talk to. You're my go-to person for really everything.

We've really done it all together: parties, nights stayed in, Sundays spent all day at the library. We've been each others support, advisor, and sometimes even mom whenever necessary. We've helped each other survive freshman year (almost) and learn to live on our own.

When I came to college, I was worried. I was worried that it would be hard to meet people and that I would never find anyone who truly understood who I was or where I came from. You were my answer to that. Though we've only known each other for six months, I feel like I've known you my whole life. We understand each other's goals and ambitions and family lives and everything else in between. We're always there to support each other, though our majors and activities don't overlap.

I know that I've made a lifelong friend in you. By going to college I met someone I didn't expect to meet right away: someone who understands me for me. Though at times we'll be hours apart (or even an entire plane ride), I know I've found someone who I can call a friend for a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Your college best friend

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
