"To Be or Not To Be" (This Halloween)

Ever wonder about what you should and shouldn't be for Halloween?

Urban Matter

Every October Americans of all ages and ethnicities dress up for or participate in celebrating Halloween. 2016 (so far) has been a year of terrible, crazy, odd and unfortunate events. Don' t get me wrong, I completely understand this holiday is wrapped around being something you're not but some people just take it a little too far. And if you haven't noticed, trying to get your point across with out offending someone is harder than getting up for an 8 A.M. on a cold morning. So here are some ideas of what to and what not to be this year.

Be:

An Olympian

Incase you forgot America dominated in Rio this past summer. Whether your alter ego is Michael Phelps or Simone Biles you can throw together some red, white and blue to create this patriotic costume.

A Pokemon Go Player

Own up to it or not but at some point this year you were running around your neighborhood looking for Pokemon and/or Pokestops. The game may have lost the spark it had those first few weeks but you can't talk about popular fads this year without naming this one. The game brought the nerdy twelve year old boy out of all of us and can be a quick and easy last minute costume.

Obama

As his time in the White House comes to an end why not grab a Barack mask at your local Party City...($9.99) for all you eager folks. If you really want to be like him throw around some hand motions and add a few "uuuuh's" to every other sentence.

Harambe

Ok so it's a great idea costume idea, but it's honestly just a gorilla suit. However, it's guaranteed 10/10 will know you're not just any gorilla. RIP.

Beyonce and Jay Z

America's power couple. Need I say more? You and your boo will be the iconic duo of Halloween. If you like the idea and hate the hassle of paparazzi you could be a less iconic duo (Kim and Kanye).

Dont Be:

A Black Lives Matter Activist

It's not funny. Being black isn't a costume. This is racist.

Caitlyn Jenner

When was it ever okay to make fun of someone for being themselves? Never. So why in the world would people think its okay to dress up as someone who was courageous enough to finally be themselves.

Bill Cosby

Don't do it. He's an accused sexual predator. He was a hilarious comedian and actor, but he's not too funny anymore.

A "Slutty" Disney Princess

No picture needed. Don't ruin our childhood. Cosutmes aren't supposed to be slutty, however young adults find a way to make any costume revealing. Halloween is for the kids. Keep it classy.

Taco Donald Trump

Donald wants to build the wall separating US and Mexico. "They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime." But who will bring the tacos?

Zombie Prince

It's one thing to dress up as a recently deceased famous person, but as soon as you put dead in front of it it's kind of rude. Give some respect and dress up as Prince in his prime. Always think about whether or not its "too soon".

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
