As I walk through campus and check my social media the day after the 2016 election, I am met with anger towards Trump's victory. This frustrates me in more ways than one.
Before the election, so many people said "America loses either way." It now becomes obvious that they didn't truly think that; their comments stand only if Trump wins. Just because you do not like a candidate does not mean you have to bash on everyone else's opinions.
The fact that people just assume all Trump supporters are sexist, racist, and rich white males is absurd and frankly, just idiotic. I am a supported of Trump and I am all for equal rights. I appreciate the need for gender gaps to be diminished and for the country to become unified. However, I also understand that Hillary was not the answer, no matter how much people would like to believe that.
Democrats are all about equality and respect, which is great, but if you disrespect the Republican party and Trump, are you truly for equality? I have been told countless times that I wouldn't understand because I am a rich white kid. However, this is being prejudice. Before you attack, prejudice is defined as "a rigid and unfair generalization about an entire category of people." Attacking all Republicans for their views and expecting them all to be rich, white, and privileged is not right.
The people that are against Trump believe that his supporters have never seen hatred and controversy. I admit, I haven't experienced the things minorities face, but by hating on who we support is not okay.
Many Americans are attacking Trump and his "posse," because they see him as racist and sexist. The only thing that you have to show this is the crooked media. Now, I understand that Trump can be mouthy and impolite, but he has stepped away from this and became a leader.
Trump's victory speech was very motivational. On CNN, he said "For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country." Does this honestly sound like a man who is trying to take over America, who is sexist and racist?
I respect your views. You have the right to say whatever you please about the election results. However, we need to give Trump a chance, a bad past does not mean a bad future. People change. Before you judge a person based on their previous actions, give them a chance. I strongly encourage the American people to become unified and to rebuild America the way we want it.
