An Open Letter to all High Schoolers

To all high schoolers,

I'm sure you're having fun in high school or maybe not. High school is one of the best moments of your educational career, so take advantage of it. Sure, most of you can't vote, but learn as much as you can about life before you're thrown out in the world. You may think that you don't have a lot of freedom but, you actually do. You're not working two or three jobs like most college students, so you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want.

Yeah, college students have WAY more freedom and less rules to follow but, we also have to worry about money. If you're school offers a class that has to deal with taxes, apartment buying, financial stuff, and other SUPER important life skills, I highly recommend you take it. The more you know, the more prepared you are for college and life in general. Being responsible now, will pay off further down the road.

Are you excited for college? Are you scared? That's okay. Trust me, life gets hard and college too but, adjusting and getting help is the best thing you can do. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I got to college but, adapting to a new social environment is a bit of a challenge. I'm just going to be honest here, college is way more stressful than I ever imagined. It isn't the funnest thing in the world writing three papers, studying for exams, and being in a group project all at the same time but, managing time is the best thing you can do.

Worried about the "Freshman Fifteen" (or as I joke with my sister, the "Freshman Fifty")? It's a very real thing. The best thing you can do is set a side time to go to the gym or run outside, eat as healthy as you can, and try not to drink too much alcohol. Finding a friend or two to go to the gym with is always a great idea. In addition, think about joining a sports team or intramural team. It's a form of exercise and socializing.

On top of exercise and diet, there is always sleep. Sleep is a glorious thing but, sleep deprivation is not. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night and may a nap or two in the week. Being sleep deprived actually makes you more stressed which, in turn, can effect other aspects of your college life. Homework and school should always come first in college. After all, you are paying thousands of dollars for your education.

Relationships? As a very single person, I can't help you with that. Sorry, you're on your own.

Friendships--I'm all about that. Finding time to do things with your friends is a great way to relieve some stress and have fun. Weekends are great for some friend time. Going on a day road trip, chilling in the dorms, going to a park, or just watching YouTube and Netflix all day is perfect.

Partying. I don't party so the only advise I can give you is: have fun, be safe, never go alone, and don't drink too much.

What this all boils down to is scheduling and organization. Organizing and planning out your day and week is the most important thing you could possibly do in college. High school, pretty much scheduled for you by the school or your parents. Enjoy high school while it lasts and prepare for your next life adventure as much as you can.

Sincerely,

A College Student

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
