It is that time of the year again! The weather is starting to get a little bit cooler, sweat pants start to slowly become the outfit of choice and everyone is still enjoying a nice iced coffee because it is New England. However, for this wonderful fall season one item will always stand out from the rest. Pumpkin Spice. Yeah, it is the one, the only, the tasty flavorful item that everyone goes crazy for during the fall. However, I have come to write this article not only to talk about this delicious flavoring, but give some background to how it started as well.
Pumpkin spice was first mentioned on a classic T.V show called Sabrina The Teenage Witch (Media Staff). For those of you who are not 90’s kids, this was a great sitcom that I highly recommend watching. In one of the scenes of the show Sabrina’s boss at the coffee shop she works at talked about a new flavor of coffee he just put out for Halloween with pumpkin flavoring in it. This episode was shockingly released just four years before the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks would hit the market. Along with it is also the 13th anniversary of the Pumpkin Spice Latte (Starbucks Newsroom). Also, this show is just one of many examples of pumpkin related items being mentioned in the media. This just happened to be the only show to put pumpkin and coffee together.
Pumpkin Spice Latte, or PSL for short, is an amazing drink and this would not be an amazing article if I did not give some cool fun facts to impress all your friends with the next time you are in line at your local Starbucks. (All facts found were written by Erin Cullum). #PSL gets on average 3,000 tweets a day. If you live in Vancouver, British Columbia or Washington DC., then you are the, “real trend setters” because these were the first locations for Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Pumpkin Spice Latte was originally never supposed to be called that in the first place. Instead, it would have almost been called Fall Harvest Latte, but baristas had used the abbreviation PSL on the cups and naturally it stuck. Along with all major heroes and role models in life make sure to put Peter Dukes on that list. This super awesome guy led the development of the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
The hype behind this beverage is so insane that I knew I had to write something about it. I am a mocha person and 365 days a year that is normally what I will ask for in my coffee. However, at time like this I feel like I am only restricting myself from enjoying my cup of coffee if I do not spice it up with some pumpkin once in a while. As usual, I hope you were able to learn something new from this article and take the opportunity this fall to ask for a pumpkin flavored drink at least once this fall. So next time you are craving a tasty hot beverage or forgot to write your paper the night before it is due, make sure to keep in mind…that procrastinating is a bad thing that we are all guilty of, but pumpkin spice sure is tasty.
