Tips & Tricks For New UT Students

Because everyone has a few questions.

Tips & Tricks For New UT Students
FJ Gaylor

I understand how intimidating it can be to start a new school, especially one with a big campus. I was new a couple years ago. Everything will be new and confusing, so I’m going to tell you some of the things that I wish someone had told me when I was new and some of the things I’ve learned during my years at UT.

1. There’s no dress code.

Looking back, I’m not sure why I ever thought there might be a dress code. It’s college, not high school! Some professors may prefer that you don’t wear pajamas though. Also, some classes will want you to dress a certain way for labs, presentations, etc., but the university as a whole doesn’t really care what you wear.

2. Get the UT app.

The app has a LOT of helpful information about topics like the busses, the library, the VolShop, events, courses, etc., but the most helpful part of the app for new students is the map. I’ve had new students tell me that they couldn’t find the app in the app store though. To find the app, all you have to do is search “Tennessee” in the app store, and it should be the first option. Look for that power T.

3. Get a planner (And actually use it).

I really cannot stress this tip enough. I never ever would have even considered using a planner in high school, but it’s essential in college. You will have so many little things you’ll have to remember. There will be homework assignments, online assignments, quizzes, exams, group meetings, etc. Without a planner, everything may seem overwhelming, but when you have everything written in a planner, you’ll know exactly what you have to do and when.

4. Use RateMyProfessor.com.

The quality of your professors can really make a huge difference in your classes. If you get the wrong professor, you may end up hating the class, and your grades could possibly suffer. Fortunately, you can look up professors on RateMyProfessor.com when you’re picking your classes so that you can pick the best professors for you.

5. Don’t wear your lanyard around your neck.

Personally, I don’t care if you have a lanyard around your neck. I won’t make fun of you, but other people may. I don’t know why there are so many freshmen who wear lanyards around their necks, but I know for sure that there are upperclassmen who make fun of freshmen for doing that.

6. Don’t sign up for an 8 a.m. if you can’t get up early.

8 a.m. classes work for some people. They work for me because I like to get classes done early in the day, but many people end up regretting signing up for the really early classes. Before you sign up for an 8 a.m. or 9 a.m., think about how easy it is for you to get up early, and plan your schedule accordingly.

7. Use MyFitnessPal to track your food.

On a college campus, you’re surrounded by food, food, and more food, and it’s all so tempting. All the food on campus is why the freshman 15 exists. If you find yourself eating a steady diet of pizza and ice cream and gaining weight, consider downloading the MyFitnessPal app. The app helps you control your portions and get to your goal weight. Don’t let your weight and health get out of control in college. You’ll have plenty of other things to worry about.

Being new can be hard, but keep these tips in mind for an easier transition to the UT life. It may take a while to adjust, but you can do it. If you have any questions or need help finding a class, ask someone. Most people will be willing to help you because Vols help Vols. Good luck this semester!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
