Tips When Traveling This Holiday Season

So today my lovely family packed our bags to head for Florida. We are Disney freaks and have been looking forward to going for Christmas for sometime. At five A.M. we woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to attack the day. We got to the airport an hour and a half early to make sure we avoided crowds. We went through all of the necessary measures to ensure that we would not be held up by security. And guess what, y'all...we still missed our flight.

Surrounded by an enormous amount of people, we ate our delicious breakfast before boarding the plane. Due to the noise, we were oblivious to the fact that they had already announced the final boarding call for our departing flight. As the large glass doors shut in our face, we realized that a delay was in our near future. Not only were we delayed, but we were not even guaranteed a seat.

So after my bizarre day, here are some helpful tips for traveling. These are relevant for anytime of the year, but take them to heart, especially during the holidays.

The Obvious Ones

1. Leave the house early.

2. Pack a light carry on so your are not slowed down by the weight (literally me all morning).

3. Do not pack liquids in your carry on. It slows down the process.

4. Have your I.D. ready at all times.

5. Wear slip on shoes.

6. Check-in online if the airline allows.

7. Listen to all announcements.

8. Check and re-check boarding and departing times.

The Not So Obvious Ones

1. If you choose to get food, eat at your gate.

2. Listen for announcements in the bathroom if you leave the gate (this is the only place they could be heard).

3. Check and re-check your gate to see if the location or time has changed. Their should be little light up boards all over the airport.

4. Dress in layers. You never know how hot or how cold the plane might be.

5. Bring headphones. The airline is going to offer you some, but they will more than likely cost five dollars.

6. Travel with a company that will provided complimentary beverages and a comfortable flight. The holidays are already stressful and if you are paying to fly, you deserve to be pampered.

7. Please stick together.

8. Check the headrest. I found out my seat had this really cool feature after I departed the plane and I was pretty upset I didn't use it while aboard.

I know that these might seem obvious, but I thought I had it all together and I still missed my darn flight. The holidays are crazy and they can make your brain bubble, but the craziness is what makes for the best memories. So take a deep breathe, relax, and enjoy the crazy ride. Whatever it may bring!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
