Tips to step up your iPhone photography game

In This Article:

There's a common misconception that in order to take great photos, you need a complex, high-end digital camera. But after trying both, I've realized that's very much not the case. Here are some tips to take amazing shots on your iPhone that will challenge even the pros!

1. Don't be afraid of color!

Slightly kicking up the vibrancy and saturation can be the touch that brings your whole photo together and adds life to the frame. Nothing catches your viewers' eye more than a good splash of color. Despite what many say, iPhone cameras are just as capable at capturing color almost as well as most DSLR's.

2. Color is important for portraits.

Having your photo follow a general color palette can help tie together all the elements and give your photo a neat, clean feel. The photo above follows a palette of browns, tans and other neutral tones that complement each other.

3. Keep an eye on your framing.

Framing is also an important thing to keep in mind when shooting portraits. Try to divide the elements into the photo's three different planes (rule of thirds!) and make sure it doesn't get too cluttered in the center. Having a center-heavy photo can make your it look cluttered and can draw focus away from your subject. Even if your subject is more centered, something as simple as having them turn their head away from the camera can help you avoid that hyper-centered look.

4. Experiment with angles.

It's surprising how taking photos of the same thing from different angles can drastically change and improve a photo. Taking photos of something head-on is an angle that gets boring after a while. So experiment! Shoot from the side, from above, even shoot from the ground! The difference that angles make is crucial. This tip is an easy one to follow since iPhones are already so portable and pocket-sized, making it easier for you to move around to get that perfect shot.

5. Take photos of anything and everything!

As cheesy as it sounds, inspiration really is around every corner. Whenever I see something that catches my eye, I make sure to snap a photo. Because it's happened several times now that I don't realize a good photo until I look back at it a second time.
