As you emerge into your adult life, chances are you feel broke. It’s safe to say most people would agree that they could use a little more money. There are ways to save your bank account from breaking that won’t break you. You may even find some joy in clearance shopping and extreme couponing when you walk out of a store feeling like you should have paid more.
1. Restaurant Apps
From Chipotle to Panera Bread, most restaurants have smartphone apps. These apps usually have coupons as well as barcodes to scan in order to gain rewards. Even if you do not frequent a particular restaurant it only takes a minute to download, can be deleted afterwards, and usually includes a coupon for joining.
2. Manufacturers’ Coupons
Store coupons are fantastic, but they usually have fine print that prevent combining them with other offers. However, manufacturers’ coupons do not have these limits. You can find them online, in newspapers, and on couponing apps.
3. Selling Unused/Old Items
Rather than allowing your unused items to collect dust, you can sell them to someone who will find joy in them. This can be done through apps like LetGo or stores like Plato’s Closet. It's easy, simple, and will make you feel like you just pulled money out of the air.
4. Comparing Prices
This one requires the most effort, but for more expensive items it can save your bank account. Comparing prices is essentially just research, but it can be made easier with model numbers.
5. Walmart Savings Catcher/ MPerks
Many people unintentionally lose money when they buy their groceries. Walmart Savings Catcher will compare prices in the area when you scan in your receipt. Meijer’s Mperks is a reward system that also includes coupons you can load onto your card. Both apps have the weekly ads on them so that you can compare prices before going.
6. Thrift Shopping
Thrift stores have the mistaken reputation of only having your grandma’s clothing and smelling like cat pee, but this is marginally untrue. It takes some sifting, but you will be amazed at what you find. In fact, thrift shopping is like treasure hunting and can make a great outing with friends.
7. Go Clearance
Before you touch any other shelves, always go to the clearance first. You might find exactly what you are looking for that is not full price.
8. Student Discounts
If you do not know just ask. Either they will say no or you will have more money in your pocket.
9. Surveys
Check the ends of your receipts, because many places offer short surveys in exchange for coupons.
10. Buy Gifts Early
Last minute gift purchasing goes hand in hand with paying full price. Buying ahead of time allows you to shop clearance. Everything is much cheaper out of season after all. Try checking out Christmas gifts and decor in June.
11. Pay Attention to Free Events
Take advantage of the free events around you while you are in college. Many times it is also an opportunity to try something new. You can find out about these events by checking bulletin boards or online.
12. Buy In Bulk/ Stock Up
As mentioned earlier, everything is cheaper out of season. Everything is also cheaper when you buy in large quantities. People make the mistake on passing up on deals, because they do not need it right now. However, you are going to need it eventually, so why not pinch some pennies while you can?
