5 Tips For A Successful Blog

I started a travel blog in 2016 because I knew I wanted to travel in the near future, and I love writing. I created it using Wordpress, which I highly recommend to anyone wanting to start a blog. You choose a layout and fill in your own information and photos. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about blogging, so here are a few of my main tips for any type of blogger!

1. Write about what you know and love

If you don’t, people won’t be confident in what you blog. You need to show readers that you know what you’re talking about, either from experience or research, and show them that you’re passionate about your topic(s).

2. Stay consistent

Make sure you continue to post entries on certain days or at certain times. I post weekly and usually on the same day and at the same time. Wordpress lets you schedule your posts too, so sometimes I’ll write two or three entries and schedule them for the next few weeks, so I don’t have to worry about it during those weeks.

3. Promote it!

Sharing your blog with the world will gain you followers and views. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are great places to share your blog link. Wordpress even lets you choose a platform you’d like your posts to automatically be shared on when your entry publishes. Another great place is within Wordpress itself. A member shares the “Community Pool” every week, so any blogger can share their latest post and ask for feedback. Through this, you’ll receive more followers, views, likes, and comments!

4. Be unique

Don’t copy other bloggers. If you see something on another blogger’s page that you’d like to add to yours that isn’t strictly that blogger’s, you can do it, but make it your own. Add something to it or change how it looks. You want to attract people that enjoy your blog because it was made by you and has your own touch to it. Think of creative things to add to yours that no one else would think of.

5. Don't give up on it!

After about 10 blog entries or so, I began fading away from posting. I went to England, and there were numerous things to write about, but I couldn’t keep up while I was there, and when I came home, I didn’t feel like writing about it. Soon after, it had been months since I posted to my blog. Eventually though, I knew I had to get it started again, so I thought of more ideas on what I could write about and scheduled the posts. Now I’ve been posting weekly again, and I’m sticking to it. Make sure you do too.

I hope these tips help, and again, check out Wordpress to start your blogging experience. You can take a look at my own blog here.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
