Tips For Your Spring Semester

Fall semester has come and gone, with many lasting memories and several academic mistakes we wish we could take back and do over. Many of us Wahoos can’t wait to get back to school and continue the second part of the year.

But before we head home and dominate those tests and quizzes, take a look at this list of spring semester tips, and take them to heart.

Make a new goal for each class.

Learn from you fall semester mistakes. You know how hard the classes you are taking this year will be, so don’t over or underestimate yourself. Make achievable goals in each individual class, because your performance in each class can differ. So before classes begin January 12, try to gage your performance and challenge yourself.

Crack down on time management.

Specifically, this one definitely applies to those involved in Greek life. Whether you are rushing or already in an organization, chances are you will be more involved in your respective fraternity or sorority. This means less time committed to studying and homework. So instead of making that late night trip to Cookout or the Castle, stay at the library and study an extra half hour. Trust me, it WILL help, and it won’t feel like time was wasted.

UVA basketball games.

If there is one extra curricular to do, you HAVE HAVE HAVE to make it to a UVA basketball game. You don’t have a choice. Not only are we ranked three in the country, but there is also a great chance at a deep postseason run. Building off of last year's magical season, each game is sure to be exciting and victorious (at least let's hope). Especially after the football woes, it’ll be nice to watch the basketball team succeed,

More extracurricular activities.

Take the spring semester to also try new activities. Getting involved in volunteer organizations is not only rewarding, but also relieves academic stress. I know from experience that I wish I was able to get more involved in the fall semester, but was overwhelmed by all the activities. Take the beginning of spring to target the known options and choose your favorites.

Work off winter break weight.

More than likely, Christmas was a time to stuff our stomachs with delicious foods, and not quite as much time at a gym. Use the spring to work off the weight and get the six-pack back. Or just lose a few pounds from break — whatever floats your boat. With the beginning of the semester being frigid, it might be hard to find motivation to get out of the apartment and head to the gym. But a good workout also relieve stress and lifts spirits and esteem. It's definitely a must in the spring.

Have fun.

Above just about anything else, enjoy the semester, however you choose to live it. There are an immense amount of activities and events around grounds, and even more friends to make. Memories galore as you become a more experienced student and person. Make it a spring to remember, and brag to friends back home over the summer.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
