Whether you're in college, a mom with kids, or just plain broke, we could all use a few tips on how to save money. I can't say I'm an expert, but I have a few pointers I'd like to share.
Buy kid’s shoes:
If you’re a tiny-footed goddess (like me) odds are you can fit into kid’s size shoes. I discovered this recently. Apparently you just subtract two sizes from your adult foot and you have you shoe size in kids. And you save about $10 in the process. Plus, think about all the times you go through the shoe aisle and find nothing you like. Well, you’re welcome, now you have a whole new aisle. And PS little girl’s boots are way cuter.
Plan your meals:
Someone actually taught me this skill. I used to just buy the regular stuff every week when I went to the grocery, and then have to go back like 3 times throughout the week to buy stuff for dinners. It’s so much easier to just go on Pinterest, pick 5-7 dinners for the week (sometimes I try to get ones with somewhat similar ingredients so I’m not buying so much) and then you just have to shop once and save money not buying unnecessary things. And, if you’re like me and don’t know what you’ll be in the mood for any particular night, don’t assign specific days. Just pick from the menu as you go.
Dollar Tree:
People vastly underestimate the Dollar Tree. Here’s the best things to buy there: cleaning supplies, socks, candles, wine glasses, Tupperware, nail clippers, nail polish, jars, dog toys, kitchen utensils, holiday decorations, party supplies, batteries, cards, oh my goodness the list goes on and on. Whenever I introduce people to Dollar Tree they are genuinely surprised. It changed their lives, let it change yours.
Walk/bike:
I know this isn’t always an option, but I am surprised by the short distances people drive. Like, it’s a 15 minute walk, why waste the gas? Plus this, overall, saves on the ware and tare of the vehicle. Sometimes I go weeks without having to fill up my gas tank, it’s wonderful.
Borrow:
The other night I was going out to dinner for my birthday and wanted to wear a new dress, but, alas, had no money. So I called up my good friend Kristen and raided her closet for one. It cost me nothing and I got to wear something new for my date. But, if you’re going to be a borrower, at least be a good one. Return all borrowed items as soon as you’re done with them or you may not be invited back to the closet-shopping-experience.
