Pokémon has been a popular series of games, movies, and television cartoons that has captivated audiences of many ages since the 1990s and the has lived on since then. Now, with the release of the Pokémon Go mobile app and the next installments of the franchise releasing in a little over a month, the "Poké-Fever" has started up again and people will be breaking out their 3DS consoles to once again set out on another adventure with their team of pocket monsters by their side. But, there are a few tips and tricks that every aspiring trainer should know before they can think about becoming the Pokémon master. Here are some of the basics that'll help get any trainer off their feet and well on their way to catching them all.

Pokémon games are all about adventure, strategy, and discovery. In order to do this, trainers needs their team of Pokémon to help them on their journey. But how do you get these creatures to join you? There are a few ways to do so. The first and most prominent way to make a Poké-friend is to catch them; there are patches of grass that can trainers can walk through in order to encounter a wild Pokémon. Once you've found one, you need to use an item called a pokeball in order catch it. The ball is thrown for a chance at capturing whatever it hits; the weaker the Pokémon, the higher the chance of capturing it. It is, however, important to remember that a trainer can only carry around six Pokémon at a time. Once you've captured more than six, all successfully captured Pokémon will be transferred to your PC box. The PC box is a storage device that can be found in certain buildings throughout the game. You can use this device to manage your team and keep track of all the Pokémon you've met. Other than capturing Pokémon, it is possible to be given them as well. The first Pokémon you'll meet on your journey is one that is give to you from a choice of three. Chose wisely because this Pokémon will be the one you start your journey with. You can also trade Pokémon with your friends or with people online; this makes it easier to get certain Pokémon and lets you carry a piece of someone else's adventure along side you.

Ok, so now you know how to get Pokemon! But what do you do with them? Almost every trainer will find that the most prominent use for your team of monsters is battling. Each Pokémon grows stronger with every victory and, as they grow, they will learn new attacks and some even change form! A Pokémon can only know four moves at a time so if you want to teach it something new, you'll have to delete one of its other moves. So what's the best way to battle? Every Pokémon and every attack has a "type" attached to it. These types tell the trainers what the will be strong against and what they will be weak against. For example, a fire type Pokémon is weak against water type attack, but a water type Pokémon is weak against grass type attacks. Grass type Pokemon are, in turn, weak to fire type attacks. It is important to keep these types in mind when it comes to battling. There are currently 18 types in the Pokémon games: water, fire, grass, rock, flying, fighting, ground, steel, ice, dark, ghost, physic, bug, dragon, fairy, electric, poison and normal. When it comes to battling, it is important to know which of these types and strong against the other. You wouldn't your Pokémon friends fighting against an opponent they are weak to.

So who will you be battling? On you adventure, you will come across many types of trainers who will jump at the chance to face their Pokémon up against yours. As you progress through the game, you will meet stronger and more challenging trainers. The more you battle, the stronger your own Pokémon will become. Once you're strong enough, you can start taking on Pokémon gyms. These gyms are home to some of the more powerful trainers and you will need to defeat them all on your journey to become the master. Each gym specializes in a type of Pokémon and will reward you with a badge upon completion. Once you've collected all the badges, you will be able to challenge the strongest trainers in the game: the Elite Four and the region champion. Battling doesn't stop in the game though. You can battle all of your friends through online battles and see which have you have raised the strongest Pokémon. Battling is fun, but don't forget to heal your Pokémon after all their hard work. Throughout each region, there are several red buildings called Pokémon Centers. This centers will heal your team back to full health and will have them ready to battle again in no time!

So now you catch Pokémon, you know how to battle, and you know who to battle. But now comes the most difficult decision every trainer must make: which Pokémon do you cathch? There are currently over 700 Pokémon and the new installments are coming with even more. So which of the hundreds of available Pokémon should you use? Well, that's completely up to you! You have complete control over what you catch and use on your adventure. You can think strategically over the types and and attacks each one has, or you can catch the one that look the coolest. It's your adventure and you choose who to share it with!

There are a lot of things to learn about Pokémon. There are all sorts of strategies, stories, and secrets that can be found in every Pokémon game. Each one is a new adventure with new Pokémon to travel with. Most trainers have different ideas when it comes to "beating" the games. Some want to have the strongest possible Pokémon while others won't stop until they've caught them all. The most important thing when it comes to playing these games, however, is having fun inside the world of Pokémon.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. "Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you.
