Tips on making the holiday season work for you and your budget.

...its the most wonderful time of the year...

Ok, not to channel my inner Bing Crosby, but I can't help but be excited for Christmas! The sweet smell of eggnog, those hideous ugly Christmas sweaters, families together and a big 'ol bill...

Uh, what???

So yes, this is the time that many people tend to overshop. And of course for us young professionals, trying to satisfy the family, your significant other or even your B.F.F., holiday shopping can be a complete bore. It's added stress that we don't need. Might the savvy goddess give you a few pointers...

1. MAKE A PLAN!
This is something that I take in with great importance. NOW is the time to organize what you are spending for your folk. Another great tip is to know what you are working with. I belong to a credit union and one of the perks is setting up a Christmas/holiday account to start saving. You'll be impressed with what you've saved in March come to fruition by November. Just like the saying, the early bird eats the worm, you'll love the benefits of a holiday plan. This is something you do not procrastinate.

2. PUT DOWN THAT PLASTIC!
This was a great tip from my friend Peter Dunn, better known to many as Pete the Planner. Do you really want to welcome 2012 with high overdraft fees from your bank? This is another importance of why saving money is crucial. This is to help you to NOT OVERSPEND and be looking at a high fee once 2012 hits. Just to be on the safe side, leave the plastic at home. You'll be less tempted to pull it out. Another tip that Peter gives is to hit the ATM. Start withdrawing cash now throughout December, to equal your budget plan. Put the money in an envelope and put it in a special place and mark it with a strange word (so no one can find it). You will have a relaxing and peaceful January in years!

3. BEING A MEMBER HAS BENEFITS!
I used to hate shopping for various reasons. One of those reasons is when the cashier asks if you want to join the membership club. But joining a club does have its benefits. For example, many stores have special VIP preview days to see what will be in inventory for the dreaded Black Friday. Some stores also have members get an early start to shop maybe an hour before opening the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or even stay open an hour late that Tuesday. I also can't forget that at some stores, you can get additional savings from what they promote in the ads or on TV. That is something to consider.

4. DO YOUR RESEARCH!
I hate to sound like a professor, but doing your research on items such as electronics can help you become a savvy shopper. Let's take a look at electronics. Usually, items like mp3 players, PC's and tablets can be discounted between the months of July-September to help college bound parents and students save. Also, that's usually the time where some retail people can give you the scoop. If you really want the latest iPad, start picking on their brains now. They're not gonna be too forthcoming once November hits.

If you follow these steps, I promise you, you too, can survive the madness that is the holiday shopping season.

Happy Savings!!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
