It’s finally August, which means plenty of people are preparing for the end of their leases and getting ready for the move-out/move-in process. Of course, this means stress is inevitable. In order to make sure that your move is as smooth as possible, here are a few tips I found helpful when I moved into my new apartment.

Step 1: Plan Ahead.

Planning is your friend. Start by making a list of everything you have – clothes, furniture items, dishes, pots and pans, silverware, décor, bathroom items, etc. By making a list, you are keeping track of everything you own so you do not miss anything. You can even separate the list into categories based on which items go together and which items you may need to purchase when you move in.

Step 2: Pack Up A Little Each Day.

Don’t wait until the last possible minute to pack up. If you give yourself a few weeks or even just one week, you can assure that you won’t be overwhelmed. Take a section of your place at a time to insure that you don’t miss anything. This is also really great for organizing your things so it is easier to unpack when you finally get to your new place.

Step 3: Don’t Be Afraid to Throw Away Unnecessary Things.

Moving out can be the perfect opportunity to throw away anything you may not need in your new place. Items can include used class materials, papers, old décor, expired food items, and even excess cords that may not be necessary any longer.

Step 4: Organize Your Things.

When packing up, make sure you pack items that coincide with one another. Label the boxes so you know which things are in which box so you will be able to tell where everything is. Purchase boxes and tape and write on the top with a marker. It is also really important to note which boxes contain fragile items so you are aware of any breakables.

Step 5: If You Need a Moving Truck, Order It ASAP.

If you are moving multiple furniture items, you may need a U-Haul or moving truck. Research different size trucks that you may need and price out multiple options so you make sure you are getting the best deal. Tip: if you are taking your items from for example, Tampa to Tallahassee, you can almost always return the truck in Tallahassee (or the city you are moving to). So, don’t let anyone tell you that you have to drive all the way back to return the truck.

Step 6: Clean Your Old Place and Return Your Keys.

Clean your place so it looks exactly like you rented it. Patch up any holes in the walls that may have had décor hanging on them. Scrub and wipe the baseboards and don’t forget to vacuum and mop the floors.

Step 7: Ask for Help.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help with the move-out process, especially if you have a lot of things that need to be moved. You don’t want to be stuck with having to move everything yourself. The more hands you have will assure you are making a smooth transition.

Step 8: Enjoy Your New Place.

Lastly, unpack your items in stages at your new place. Take one room at a time and make sure you unpack everything you own. Take it all in and enjoy your new place!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
