As one who allows my brain to decide when I am OK and not OK, anxiety gets the best of me. I have constantly been working on figuring out ways to ease my anxiety for myself and I wanted to share some tricks I enjoy that might help you in times of need:
1. Play a game
Whether it is Trivia Crack or Sudoku, play a game that distracts you for a small amount of time so that your brain can relax from all the outside stress you might have. These games are my go to games when my anxiety decides to take over my entire day.
2. Watch your favorite movie (preferably comedy)
For me, "The Notebook" is my all-time favorite movie, and although a comedy should be the first choice, this one definitely calms me down when I am at my all-time stress high.
3. Call your best friend
This one might seem a little different then alone time, but having someone just listen will allow you to say everything you feel with the trust that they will keep it confidential and help you find ways to cope with your anxiety.
4. Take a shower/bath
I 100% love taking showers and especially when your anxiety runs high — this is a good way to relax and sing a little in the shower.
5. Focus on your breaths
Every time my anxiety strikes I feel as if my chest constricts a little, but being able to focus on your deep breaths will allow you to re-energize and relax.
6. Cuddle someone
Although I am not one who is big at cuddling, having someone hold you in a short time shows that you are not alone and allows you to unwind.
7. Eat food or drink water
This might be the simplest to do, but especially at times when your anxiety takes over, it is good to refresh yourself with some water or to eat something, even if it's only crackers.
8. Listen to your favorite song and go for a walk
At times when anxiety takes over, the feeling of a room getting smaller is not uncommon. Allow yourself to go outside, get some fresh air, and give yourself the freedom to roam.
9. Lastly, find a therapist
In recent times, the thought of going to counseling or seeing a therapist has been almost taboo, but it is one of the best decisions you can have when coping with anxiety. This allows you to have a professional help you with your specific situation and without bias.
I hope some of these tips can help when anxiety takes over. I know how it feels to constantly over-think every situation, but having these simple opportunities allow me to focus less on why I am anxious about something and allow me to focus on myself and what I need.
