Traveling to new and exciting places is certainly something that a lot of people will be doing over spring break. Traveling is a lot of fun, and it should be as stress free as possible. But I know that when I get to somewhere brand new, I often find myself worrying about all the little things. I have started trying to find ways to remind myself that traveling isn't as nearly as big a deal as I think it is. Maybe some of you are often anxious travelers, so here are a few things to know when you go somewhere new.
1. Always be willing to ask for directions.
Whether you need help with the local transportation or you just don't have a grasp on where that little cafe is, you should always know that you can stop and ask someone. Many people will be willing to help you out, and in some places, there may be little info kiosks in airports or transportation areas to help you get from A to B. All you have to do is stop and ask someone. Maybe you'll make a friend or two on the way.
2. Keep your eyes open.
When you're traveling in a new place, everything can be overwhelming, but keeping your eyes open can mean that you spot things you might have otherwise missed. You might even see things that the locals skip over now. The little things can sometimes be more enjoyable than the large sites that everyone flocks to. Maybe it's a store on a crowded street, or maybe it's a small courtyard just off of a narrow street, but always keep your eyes peeled for those little things that you'll remember years from now.
3. Go slow.
Along with keeping your eyes open, you should be willing to go slow. Don't plan trips that take you across the city twice in an afternoon. Give yourself as long as possible to explore this new place; that'll give your eyes plenty of time to catch those little things. It'll also give your mind plenty of time to ponder everything else. You'll be glad that you did it.
4. Enjoy the sights.
While it is tempting to go fast and to spend only a few minutes in a single spot, you will want the time to enjoy everything there. You'll want to see the different angles and maybe spend time with the locals and chat with people that interact with this spot often.
5. Try local foods.
One of the best parts of traveling is getting to eat good food with friends (or by yourself). Food is important to us, and every new place has new things for you to try. Do a little research into this for your next trip. Find out what the locals love about certain restaurants and give your taste buds a chance to try new flavors and new combinations of familiar flavors.
6. Sit for a moment.
This isn't about enjoying the sights, but letting yourself relax. Traveling can be one of the most stressful experiences you go through. Taking a few moments to just sit and read your favorite book in a Starbucks isn't a crime if it makes you feel a little bit more relaxed. Maybe take your moment at the beginning of the day if you want time before you go out into the world. Maybe take your moment before you go to the hotel and just take a breather and reflect on the day you had.
But, no matter where you are, be happy.
