As a writer, I have been trying to write something, anything, every day. The troubles are: writer's block, semi-formed ideas, and that there are only 24 hours in a day. If you want to improve your writing or just want to write more, here are some helpful hints on getting yourself to write every day.
1. Just write
You have to find some time in the day to write something. Even if it's a few pages, one page, or a paragraph. Write something. Write it on paper or a napkin if you can't use a computer. Just write something. It doesn't have to be perfect. You don't need the blueprint in your mind. All you have to do is write a little bit every day and then you'll be writing more.
2. Solving writer's block
I find myself challenged by not having a good idea of how to start, and that's okay. You don't need to write a novel. You don't even need to know everything about the book to start it. Just write something down. Even if it's not an entire idea, just start out with a theme or an idea. You probably have tons of ideas in your head, so pick one. Just write a short story about it. Re-write a conversation you had with a friend or go back in time. Take it to another world or planet. It's better to get something on paper and that way you can be inspired by one of those ideas and run with it. The importance is getting it on paper and seeing where it goes from there.
3. How to improve your writing
Do you want more detail in your description of a place or person? Do you want more character development through dialogue? I have a tip for you. Write down your ideas for the scene or character. What does it look like? Where is it? Pick up a thesaurus for help. What does she look like? What should be the first line he says? What do you want to reveal about his personality in this part of the story? Answer these questions before you write it out. Learn new words to describe the world in which your characters thrive. In order to improve your writing, you have to write. It doesn't have to be perfect. That's what editing is for.
4. Force yourself to be inspired
I know this is going to sound like your creative writing teacher from high school, but those little exercises will help. They may be mundane and feel childish but you have to write something. Even if it is describing the room, you have to write something down, otherwise you're not doing anything. You're not keeping yourself sharp. You have to write about boring things because they may inspire you. You don't know where inspiration comes from, but if you try new things, who knows where it will go? Take something from your daily life and write about it. It may be the start of your new story.
