6 Tips For Dealing With Anxiety During Finals Week

Getting through finals week is definitely the worst time of the year for anyone in college, and having an anxiety disorder can make it infinitely more challenging. Learning to balance the stress of managing your time, while also juggling all the panic and racing thoughts you can’t always control, can drive anyone absolutely insane. Here are some tips that have helped me tackle my anxiety during finals week to get everything I need to get done in one peace.

1) Breathing!

Learning to control your breathing when you start to panic is such an important skill to have. When we get super stressed, our breathing automatically starts to quicken and we take shallower breaths, while when we are calm, it's the opposite. Controlling your breathing actually tricks your brain into calming down, and studies have shown that people who practice square breathing twice a day significantly improved their overall levels of stress and anxiety.

2) Getting Enough Sleep!

Sleeping is so important when managing anxiety, but is also so difficult to acquire when your mind is racing nonstop. Avoiding caffeinated drinks in the evening and trying to get all your work done two hours before you actually get to bed can help give your brain a break so you can get some sleep.

3) Making Lists!

This sounds a little obvious, but making lists helps so much when you have a million and one things to tackle in a short period of time. Not only is making a list helpful, but being able to cross things off your list gives you an awesome sense of accomplishment and boosts your motivation to get everything done.

4) Talking To Someone

Talking to a friend or someone you trust can be super helpful when things become overwhelming. It's completely okay to have a meltdown every once in a while. We're all human, and having a brain that likes to go a little haywire once in a while doesn't make it any easier. Talking about the things that are stressing you out with someone else can even help you rationalize some of the crazy thoughts that are going through your head that might not be as serious as you're making it out to be.

5) Remembering Break Is Just Around the Corner!

Having something to look forward to after a hard week of exams is a huge motivator to just do your best and power through the end of the semester. It can be discouraging to dwell on all the work you have to do, so I like to think more about how in a week I won't have to worry about any of it anymore.

6) Remember You Aren't Alone!

As anxious and overwhelmed as you are, just know that you aren't the only one feeling it. Anxiety is super common and millions of people have learned to overcome it, and so can you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
