How to Get Back in the Groove

In This Article:

Every Christmas break, I lose track of what day it is, wake up around 11, and I do absolutely nothing the entire 3 weeks. Of course, this year was no different which makes coming back to school very difficult. Sometimes, I will be excited to come back and see my friends again. This year, though, I just did not want to leave my bed.

Classes at Mississippi State started back today and I am dying inside. I did not prepare for waking up at 7 am, and I am suffering because of it.

Hopefully these tips will help you prepare for your Spring semester and start it off right!

Start Regulating Your Sleep Schedule

Eating a ton of food and having nothing to do makes me stay in bed all day. Because I have no schedule during break, I lose track of time and go to bed and wake up super late.

To avoid the complete shock of waking up 5 hours earlier than you usually do, take baby steps. Maybe start about a week before you get back to school.

Start by going to bed 30 minutes or an hour earlier than you usually do and do the same for when you wake up. Instead of going cold turkey, this will help you regulate your sleep schedule without feeling cranky and tired on the first day of class.

Get All of Your School Supplies Early

Usually, I don't buy notebooks and binders until after the first week of classes because I don't know what I need yet. Try to ask around and see if people who have taken classes you will be taking can tell you what you need beforehand. This will help you be more prepared for your first day, and give you more time to nap or relax after a long first day.

If you can't find anybody to help you out, at least research what textbooks you need and buy or rent those. This way, you can just focus on getting back into the rhythm of things during the week instead of scrambling around last minute trying to get everything you need.

Write Down Your Schedule

I always triple check my schedule on the first day. I get super paranoid that I will walk into the wrong classroom on the first day of school and get called out for it (yes, this has happened to me before).

To avoid total embarrassment, write out your schedule in your planner because this will help you memorize your class times and locations more quickly. It's also a lot easier to just go into your planner and check your schedule there than to log into all of your school accounts and find your master class schedule.

Treat Yourself

There's no need to stress about the first day back, especially because 99% of it just going over rules and class expectations. Tell yourself that after you complete your first week or even first day, you will treat yourself.

Go to the movies with friends or even just get yourself some ice cream. This will give you something to look forward to and help you get through the week.

Start Off Strong

Some classes have homework or quizzes assigned on the first day. Get into a schedule of completing assignments and studying for quizzes early, so you can stay on track all semester.

As your classes get harder, this will make it easier to stay on schedule and avoid cramming for exams the night before, which happens to the best of us.

Make this semester your best one yet. And remember, if I can do it you can too!

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

And despite her sometimes harsh words, April truly cares about the people she's closest to. These are all reasons she is the epitome of a college student. Life is full of twists and turns, but you have to keep going.

Life is all about twist and turns, sideways and which ways. Nothing is permanent, so we should take risks, and chase our dreams. We are taught at a young age many lessons that will follow us into adulthood. What we aren't taught is how to feel, and how we handle those emotions. We just have to figure them out ourselves, and that's not fun. In my 21 years of living, I have come to know that way too many people can't handle emotions, or the fact that not everyone is dead inside like them. When you're like me, and you have zero control over your emotions, it's hard to feel comfortable around people who aren't so in touch with themselves. As much as I would like to feel nothing at times, I've accepted who I am and the fact that I can cry over practically nothing. So, there are some things in life that you just have to do.
