If you were excited about attending a convention, then disappointed after it was canceled, worry not. Although it is becoming more common to hear about remote work, remote leisure activities are also still happening. Many conventions are being held online this year, and while it may be different, geeks of all kinds can still have a great time connecting and interacting online. If you're not attending some of your favorite conventions in-person this year, there are a few things to keep in mind when you're going for the virtual experience. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when attending an online geek convention.

Understand Communication Protocols

Specific events inside each convention probably have some guidelines for fans to follow. In most cases, these rules help to ensure that organized, civil discussions surrounding fandoms can take place. However, you'll need to get a handle on how you can communicate with administrators and other fans outside of the virtual venues as well. You will probably be able to email event hosts with any questions you might have. Discord servers with moderators are a common way for online discussions to take place.

Check Your Internet

Online geek conventions may alternate between simple chatroom discussions and live video feeds. The videos may be in conference format and include of several participants at once. If you want to make sure you don't miss anything, get a subscription with a reliable internet provider. Your ISP may offer good deals and fast speeds for new members.

Buy Tickets Early

If the convention of your choice has multiple events in which you are interested, it is a good idea to purchase any tickets you might need as soon as you can. In some cases, admission is free. However, the host may charge you a small amount to get in on the action and actually play a game during a particular event. If you find that you can't buy tickets, check to see if the host will be doing a livestream. Watching a stream is still a great way to get a feel for the con.

Familiarize Yourself with the Tools

Different events at a geek convention may use various applications to make things work. If possible, you should see what kinds of programs the con hosts are going to use to facilitate virtual events. You can download these programs and explore their functions before the convention starts.

Conventions are usually packed with fans from all over the world who have waited months to see some of their favorite hobbies or interests come to life. However, travel times, finances, or general uncertainty due to a host of other factors could contribute to more online fan conventions. Don't forget that if some of the online events involve playing games along with chatting, the combined activities could tax your system. Check your computer's requirements to make sure you have the hardware you need.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
