Whether it's to get ahead or to try new things, online classes can be extremely helpful, extremely stressful or a weird, scary combination of both. The stress of trying to learn things by yourself with little help, combined with looming weekly deadlines and no human interaction, can overtake the actual learning. Figuring out websites, waiting for responses, all of it can compile into a ball of stress that ultimately distracts from the real reason we take things online - to learn new things and get ahead. Here are some tips to help you be successful while taking your online classes:
1. Pay attention in orientation.
I made this mistake myself. Taking my first online class, the website seemed pretty straightforward. I skimmed through the first few pages and then just skipped to the end. It was all pretty much common sense, right? Wrong! The first assignment was a struggle, to say the least. I got so confused, I ended up turning in the assignment at the wrong place. All of this could have been avoided if I had just paid attention to the orientation. Don't get cocky. Read the orientation.
2. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Maybe I'm weird or just very socially awkward, but I was pretty excited that the class didn't involve any mandatory face-to-face time. This made me really hesitant to ask questions, which probably counted for some missing pieces in my assignments. It's crazy because when I did ask, my teacher was so accommodating and kind. There's no bigger mistake than not asking. Don't be afraid.
3. Don't procrastinate.
I know, I know. Everybody says this, and it's much easier said than done. But please, for your sake, do not do everything on the last day. You would not believe how much I have cried as midnight crawls ever closer. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, and that is not you, my friend. Close out of Netflix, and I promise you'll thank me.
4. Plan accordingly.
I know this sounds like a repeat of "don't procrastinate," but that's not what I mean. It may sound like common sense, but be absolutely sure you have reliable internet access and enough time to finish something before you start it, especially if you're on the clock.
5. Talk to other online students.
I have a study buddy. His name is Jai. You need one, too. We talk about assignments and work together. When things get stressful, we help each other out. Just having a friend who can reassure and help you honestly means the world during tough days.
Happy studying!
