It's that time of the year again. Eager 18 year olds are ready to leave the nest and venture out to their new home away from home. Leaving for college can be an exciting yet stressful time and these are a few tips before the big move in day.
1. Tie up those loose knots
After high school everyone goes their own way, it's inevitable. Despite maybe never seeing these people again you don't want to end on a bad note. Good karma can possibly come your way if you apologize for that fight after that one party or send a nice text to your ex. As hard as it can be sometimes closer can be the best thing.
2. Talk to your family
So many kids don't appreciate their parents enough and it will come back to haunt you. Your parents are most likely the ones helping you get wherever you're about to go (and if not, good for you!). Please don't shun your parents the summer before college, you're not an adult yet. Sit down at dinner time and tell them about your day, I can guarantee it'll make theirs. Without them you wouldn't be where you are right now.
3. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare
I cannot stress this enough, plan what you need for schools months in advance. Not only is the bill hefty for school but for the supplies as well. This year you're not only buying notebooks and binders, you're buying an entirely new room. That list and bill is going to be a lengthy one. The damage isn't as bad if it's in sections. Buy bathroom essentials one week, then a few weeks later stock up on decorations, etc.
4. Save money
Money is going to be slim in college for almost any full time student. If you want the full college experience then you better save the summer before you leave. It's definitely nice to not have to worry if your debit card is going to swipe at Starbucks because mom and dad aren't paying for that meal plan. Babysit, find a summer job, do yard work, there's a million ways to make easy cash in the summer. Trust me it's worth it.
5. See as many people as possible
Make time for those friends who you saw at your high school football games or in anatomy class. They may not have been your best friends but it's good to catch up over lunch or a quick trip to the gym. Talk about senior year or what their plans are for the future. These people are your "school friends" but since high school is over this may be the last chance to say goodbye.
6. Don't waste your time
Some of you may have those friends you feel like your stuck with, or those people you just don't like. You've known them your whole life and now that high schools over your realizing they're actually pretty obnoxious. Don't waste your last summer at home hating the time you spend with them. Go out and enjoy your final weeks with the people you actually care about. Don't feel bad about it either.
7. Enjoy your summer
This may be the last time you're around all those familiar faces. Don't sit at home binge watching How I Met Your Mother. Find something to keep you busy. Go for a walk down your neighborhood, say hello to the old couple down the street just like you did when you were 8. Walk into the grocery store and don't hide your face hoping someone doesn't recognize you, start conversation and brag about where you're going to school. You're starting a new chapter, but for now enjoy the one you're finishing.
