Tips For Going To The Beach

Time to soak up the sun!

Tips For Going To The Beach

Summer is almost here! Soon enough, we'll be swimming during the day and eating ice cream to cool off at night. Summer might be my favorite time to go to the beach, for I love sitting under the sun and then cooling off in the ocean. It is even better when you go with friends, but some people might not know how exactly to navigate the beach. For those who might not go to the beach as often, or maybe for those who need a refresher after these long winter months, here are a few tips for getting the most out of your beach day.

Spread out as much as possible.

This is your day, right?! You can take up as much space on this beach as you can. Don't mind the other people sitting near you, I'm sure they would be happy to move so you can put your cooler next to your tent while you set up your three umbrellas. Bonus points if you kick sand on your neighbors while setting up.

Leave your trash everywhere.

They don't pay the beach workers for nothing! Nothing would make them happier than to clean up after your mess. Other beach patrons might beat them to the cleaning up, but you don't have to worry about it at all! Sure, pollution is an issue that should be addressed, but we'll get to that tomorrow, right?

Blast music as loud as you can.

We all know you have the best taste in music! Everyone is anxiously awaiting to hear you blast Pitbull from your Beats Pill. What could we all do without those pulsating bass from your speaker? It's all on you to make sure everyone can hear your beach playlist you made in the car ride there.

When in the water, try and go out as far as possible.

The lifeguards should thank you ahead of time for this. There is no such thing as "too far." The farther you go out in the water, the better! Sure, there's strong currents and riptides, but the lifeguards are there to guide you.

Don't wear sunscreen, it's pointless.

If you're anything like me, you'll burn either way. So, why even bother. (Oh wait...maybe wear some. Skin cancer is still around.)

Wear layers.

This is the best UV protection. 90-degree weather might discourage you from putting that flannel on, but you'll be pulling off a great winter look! If you don't want to spend money on sunscreen, go back into your closet and dig out those long sleeves and jeans. They won't be comfortable, and they won't dry quickly, but you'll definitely be protected from the sun!

Take as many pictures as possible.

Let's be real loyal readers. If you didn't take any pictures, did you really go to the beach? By the time you get home, my social media feed should be filled with your pictures of sand, water, and you with all your friends! They never get old, and are never repetitive.

So I encourage you to take these tips and put them to use the next time you find yourself down at the shore. Who knows, maybe by using these tips you'll enjoy the beach more! Have a happy and safe summer!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
