I am forever stuck in an internal battle between my travel bug and my bank account. I love to travel, and when I say love, I mean I have a pages-long bucket list of all the places I want to go. I would travel to a different city or country every weekend if that was financially possible, but as a broke college student I struggle to feed myself every weekend, much less go on any adventures. I am reminded of this every time a college break rolls around, but there are still ways to tame your travel bug even when you're dirt poor.
1. Take a (stereotypical) road trip
So obviously this idea is nothing new, but there is a reason road trips are so popular - they're inexpensive AND you get to see as many things as you want on your way to your destination. Want to go somewhere warm? Plan your trip so you can see some landmarks, or stop at some famous restaurants along the way.
2. Do some research
If you're flexible in your travel destination, try doing some research about financial situations in other countries because then you can find the cheap places to travel where your money will go a long way. For example, ever since the UK said "see ya" to the EU, the pound is down 30% and airfares have also dropped. As you can see, a little research can help you find some bargain-priced adventures!
3. Skip the typical spring break destination
If you're trying to save a pretty penny, I hate to break it to you, but that means you're going to have to skip that trip to Cancun. Not only are plane ticket prices going to skyrocket around Spring Break time, but good luck finding anywhere to sleep for less than $200 a night. Instead, try to find an equally relaxing hidden gem that won't drain your already bleak budget.
4. Visit family
Have an uncle in Texas or a godmother in California? Don't be afraid to ask if they have room for you! As long as you know how to be a polite house guest (bring a gift, clean up after yourself, write a thank-you note), embrace your family because after all, they are your family!
5. Go camping!
There is no better way to save money than packing that sleeping bag and tent and spending the night under the stars! While I wouldn't suggest pitching a tent in the middle of a busy city, take a drive to a nice campsite and enjoy the chance to become one with nature.
6. Plan ahead
If you dream about your vacation far enough in advance, you can make the decision to cut something out of your budget and put that money in your travel fund. For example, if you cut out a $4 latte and instead brew your own coffee at home 5 days a week for 6 months, you could save a whopping $480!
Don't let your bank account hold you back! Embrace your inner wanderlust!
