Tip Your Waiters

They don't have to serve you.

Tip Your Waiters
Mariani's Virtual Gourmet

The time period we live in allows for an abundance of opportunities that make our lives easier. We can text and make phone calls instead of relying upon letters. Shopping is no longer necessary because many things can be purchased online and even downloaded immediately. And...instead of preparing meals three time a day, seven days a week, you can walk into a restaurant and order a meal and have it brought to you.

We take advantage of these conveniences without putting too much thought into it. I struggle the most with people who do not tip their waiters when eating out. There are a few things to take into account when it comes to why you should ALWAYS tip.

These people do not have to be kind to you! If you act like a rude and inconsiderate human being, then you should not expect them to be incredibly kind to you. Yes, many will still be polite and do their jobs without a hitch but I guarantee to you that when they go out for drinks tonight with their friends, you will be the person they talk about and make fun of over apps. You become the joke and everyone, especially those in the restaurant, will think you are an idiot. You are not hurting them and you will not make think that they are terrible at their job.

We all have bad days and we all make mistakes. This does include waiting staff. Please, please, please do not ever walk into a restaurant and expect for everything to be absolutely perfect and for you to be treated like royalty. 9 times out of 10 this will not happen and you are only going to be disappointing yourself. If mistakes are made, if your waitress forgets your side of ranch or takes 5 minutes before bringing you a refill, get off of your high horse and realize that you are not her only priority. She probably has a million and two things going on and she is not purposely shunning you. She is busy. Don't be a flaming over-reactor.

These people rely on tips. My god, I cannot stress this enough! Most people in the serving industry get paid very little because they do earn tips. Their paychecks alone usually cannot cover all of their bills. Without tips, they might not make rent this month. You have no idea. If people find it acceptable to walk into a restaurant, eat and then leave without tipping the server, you are ripping off the people that just waited on you. You don't deserve to have good service if you cannot appreciate it.

Tip your waiters. No, it doesn't have to be 30% tip. But if they went above and beyond to give you the best service, then why not? They go through a lot of hell working in the industry that they do and working with people every single day. They deserve a hell of a lot more than for you to walk out without leaving a tip. Be respectful. Be appreciative. Be aware.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
