I always hear about how "High School Musical" (HSM, as we true fans call it) left people disillusioned. Perhaps it was just a funny joke on Twitter that got retweeted too many times, but people were claiming that it set them up for the wrong idea of high school! They went to school freshman year, walked inside and gasped. Nothing like the movie. Did you really except tables spinning and people belting out the fact that they hate homework? Newsflash for you Martha, we all did!
Well, I'm here to prove this joke wrong. Because despite the lack of musical numbers at any school, the rest of this movie is SPOT ON and taught me everything I needed to know.
1. There are nerds who aren't looked down upon
Kelsey, it's your time to shine. Though in the past students may have been ridiculed for their interests, and smart people have been insulted... no longer! Now we envy those 4.0 GPA kids and strive to be them! High school is where good grades are a requirement for college and intellect is everything.
2. There are mean girls
Mean girls who will cry if you drop your crazy ass chili cheese fries on their new shirt. Can you blame them though? Just... smooth, Gabriella. Real smooth.
3. There are musicals!
They're not exactly the talk of the school, but they are there! So, that sort of counts!
4. When different groups meld, it can be fun!
Around senior year, we start to remember that we are all going through the same things, and you get to meet people from all different necks of the woods! It's exciting and strange and a first taste of college life. Diversity is celebrated and uniqueness is amazing! From basketball players to band kids, we are all in this together.
5. There are hot guys that will never love you
We must admire our girl Sharpay's dedication. She really, really fuckin' tried. You'll get him next time, sis.
It may not be a play by play exactly, but this childhood movie that we all know and love has taught us more than we know.
Whether you're a basketball boy, drama girl, tuba player, super nerd, video game guy, anyone or anything, we are all a mix of entirely unique, and exactly the same. Deep lessons, Disney.
Go Wildcats!
