It's Time To Unite America

Regardless of your political view, lets do the one thing we all have control of.

On November 9, 2016, I cast my first vote in a United State Presidential Election. In that moment, I felt nothing but pride and joy for the freedom I was granted in order to be able to have my voice heard. I wish I could go back to that moment, the way I feel this morning is quite the opposite of what I felt them.

I woke up the next morning in disbelief because of the results, Donald J. Trump as our 45th president. Whether you are for or against Donald Trump, I hope you can all take something away from what I am about to say. Regardless of my political view, I want to focus on the elements this country needs. The things we can do without the government, things that are in our control. We need to unite.

Donald Trump has ran his entire campaign on nothing but division. After his win he said he was going to ‘unite’ America. How? How will this happen if we are taught to look at Mexican immigrants as rapist and murders? How are we supposed to when fellow American Muslim’s are terrorist? I cannot wrap my mind that he can unite us.

That is why it’s our responsibility to love one another more than ever. When are we going to get over these stereotypes that are destroying our country? Trump can’t fix it, only we can. We are all American’s, so why are we tearing each other down?

My heart breaks for those who are truly affected by this election. I hope all of the grandiose comments Trump stated during this campaign does not follow into his time as our President. Let's hope for better days and to be truly united as Americans. That’s the only thing we can control at this point.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
