It’s been a week. Actually 11 days, 9 hours and 4 minutes since Donald J. Trump became the President of the United States. Which means that we are now beyond the debates, and past the voting stages. It’s time to start facing the facts, he is our Commander in Chief for the next four years. There is no use in trying to change the past.
This past November, we, as a nation, were faced with a decision that most of us never thought we would see. Yes, there is an election every four years, and yes, they have become increasingly more controversial and potentially groundbreaking. But this election was one truly for the books.
Not controversial because it involved the nation’s first female candidate. Or even because our first African American President would be stepping down. But mainly due to the outrageousness of the debates, the constant slander, and the fact that it seemed more like America's pettiest game show rather than a decision of who would be "not the worst" choice to run the country.
While the country was split Democrat versus Republican, male versus female, and platform verse platform, I found myself in the middle of the road, among many others who may or may not care to admit it. I found myself not paying attention to who was becoming our leader because, frankly, I did not see the leader that we need in either of them and was seeing a lot of negatives that were not necessarily outweighed by the positives of their arguments and potential policies.
With that in mind, I know I am now among several hundred thousand citizens of this country who, for one reason or another, are not okay with Donald Trump being President.
Regardless of how any of us may feel about our current President, there is one thing that many of lost sight of, and it is just that. He, Donald J. Trump has been sworn into the office. He is our leader. The Commander in Chief. The President of The United States of America. This is simply a fact that we need to face. There is nothing that we can do at this moment in time. If he truly does become the president that so many of us fear, we must trust the other two branches of our government to stand up and do what is right for the progression of this country and impeach him. But at this moment in time, we must give him the opportunity to do either right or wrong, and succeed or fail in this office. Because without that chance, there will always be naysayers and doubters; however, there will, of course, always be the unknown.
All of these marches and protests, all of these Facebook posts and banter back and forth with one another can not change the outcome of this election. We now have Donald Trump in the White House, where he will reside for the next four years. And as citizens of this great country we are allowed to be disapproving of this, and we are allowed to be disappointed, but we also must now give him a chance, because rooting for his downfall is, in turn, rooting for our own.
We cannot be standing together to protest every policy change he makes. It may not be in the way many of us see it, but, as the President, he is trying to help our country progress, not regress. So to all of those who are less than pleased; hang in there. Although a man who may not have been anyone's number one choice, President Trump deserves a chance.
Make us proud, Sir. Show us what you've got.
