Let me tell you about the time that I spent my entire life savings buying a plane ticket on a whim the night before to see my favorite band one last time.
It was a little over a year ago; I wasn't exactly in a great place in my life. I was in a rut, I felt like I was living a boring mundane day-to-day life. At the time I felt like it was me against the world and I just really needed something to snap me out of rut. That summer I found out that my favorite band, One Direction, was planning on "taking a break" or maybe even breaking up. Their last performance in the United States, possibly ever, was a weekend in mid-September. I always thought about how amazing it would be to go to their last show, but let's be practical here, I was a broke college student.
I don't know what made me do it. Maybe it was because I was in this dreadful rut. Or maybe because I just needed some excitement in my seemingly boring life. Or maybe it was because I was so desperate to feel the excitement of seeing my favorite band one last time again. I don't really know what made me do it, but the night before their last concert I spent pretty much my entire life savings on a plane ticket from Cleveland to Boston for the next morning.
That weekend was one of my possibly the best adventure I have ever had. I was on a high of carpe diem and finally felt like I broke free from my awful rut that I had been in ever since I started college. I was living in airports, I was meeting so many new people, I was carpooling with strangers, I was over 600 miles away from all my responsibilities and obligations. Nothing felt more freeing. When I walked into that stadium I felt like I was finally living. Going on that crazy adventure to see my favorite band, the one thing that made me happy regardless of anything, was exactly what I needed in that moment in my life. And I don't regret a penny spent on it.
That experience changed my life. I started living differently after that. I learned that you are in charge of your own life. You can do whatever you want.I learned that you need to take risks and you need to be spontaneous. I learned that it is okay to be reckless and irresponsible while you're young because if you don't do that now, you never will. I learned that no matter how crazy something sounds there's always a way to make it happen. I learned that it's better to spend your money on experiences than things and it's okay to break into your savings account sometimes.
So take a spontaneous road trip this weekend, buy a last minute plane ticket to somewhere you've always wanted to go, go skydiving, get a tattoo, learn how to speak a different language, try new foods, explore new places because life is too short.
