I never understood the Alabama-Auburn rivalry until I actually decided to join the Crimson Tide. I've never had any intentions on going to Auburn and did not even think about applying to the school. The two fan bases despise each other, and you will never find me dressed in blue or orange on gameday. Thanksgiving serves as one holiday in November, but the Iron Bowl is just as a celebration in Alabama.
To most, football is just a sport. Not that way in the South. Football is more than just a game, it is a way of life. Gathering with family and friends for a nice tailgate on the Quad is a Southern tradition everyone enjoys. You can never go wrong with homemade buffalo chicken dip or hot barbecue wings. Hurry and grab your tent for the best rivalry game of the year. The Iron Bowl never disappoints.
Those who are residents of the state of Alabama understand there is a decision to make. When prompted the question, "are you for Auburn or 'Bama?" there are no ifs, ands or buts about it. I remember the first time a classmate asked me this question when I moved to Bama in the fifth grade. Growing up in Kentucky, I had no preference on deciding who to cheer for in college football. As long as the Cats were winning during basketball season, I was perfectly content. Over the years, I quickly learned that you must choose a side for the Tigers or the Tide. While my family grew up as Alabama fans, there was no choice for me to switch now. I adapted to cheering on the Crimson Tide, and I definitely don't regret my decision to attend the best college in the country.
The Iron Bowl rivalry goes beyond anything normal in a civilized society. The weeks leading up to this "holiday" are quite different than what one may think. Following the previous year's win, Iron Bowl conversation gives bragging rights to the Tigers. However, Bama's national title and the undefeated season has the odds in their favor. Disagreements between Tide and Tiger fans have caused families to be divided and friendships to fail. Football games may not always seem so serious, but this rivalry will have trash talk written all over conversation during the week.
The most important game of the year is finally upon us. With a passion that runs deeper than blood, the Iron Bowl rivalry continues to be unique. Since the Kick Six in 2013, you can never predict if Bama or Auburn will win the game. Our only hope is that Tua will to continue to lead the Crimson Tide offense to victory and a big, shiny trophy will come back to Tuscaloosa in January. Adding one more game to the books this Saturday, we are one step closer to championship 18. May the tide keep on rolling, for "I hope we elect to kick ass" – Nick Saban.
Roll tide forever and ever,
Ashley
