The end of the semester has descended upon us like a vulture: clawing at our eyes, depriving us from safety, and pecking at our faces. Ok, maybe I'm a tad dramatic, but we can all agree that this academic season is not the most pleasant time of the year. With the temptation of collapsing under stress, we need to be reminded that there is a time for hardships like the present but also a time for refreshment, utilizing the knowledge, and rejoicing in carefree living. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 informs this understanding:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.”
As we navigate our responsibilities, opportunities, and decisions for not just academics but in every other aspect of our lives, we can simmer in the truth that our current situation is bound to continually change. We may be in a season of enjoying our friendships with floormates and roommates, knowing full well that the time for embracing might soon become a time to refrain from embracing (v. 5). Maybe it is time to pursue personal dreams and plans, or maybe we need to set them aside or give them up (v. 6). A friendship or relationship might need to be torn or mended (v. 7). In our interactions, occupations, and general life, we know that there is "a season for every activity under the heavens" (v. 1). And yes, at risk of misinterpreting Scripture, there is a time for studying, but a time for Netflix, too.
And thankfully, these times don't "just happen" but are in reality planned and controlled by the Lord, who is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
So in this time of uncertainty, challenge, and stress, know that it is just a season. Whenever you are faced with joy, blessing, hardship, confusion, or questioning in your current situation, know that it too shall pass, so act accordingly by giving it the attention it incites.
May God give you the proper attitude and understanding towards the timing of your life, and may you live each season fully and wholeheartedly.
