Don't Be Butter!

If your time-management skills are lacking, you may be spreading yourself too thin.

Don't Be Butter!

I am the absolute worst at time management. I am super scatter-brained and I never know what I'm supposed to be doing. This is a problem that I am desperately trying to solve.

So like any good little millennial, I took to Pinterest. There is a huge consensus on the basics you need to have under your belt in order to have good time management.

Number one; organization. You want to organize yourself, your life, and your events. Try and keep your space as uncluttered as possible. Put your clothes away after you do them, have specific spaces for your school items and your personal items and make sure you put them in those spaces when you are not using them. Make sure you write down what you need to do and when, make to-do lists for the day.

Number two; prioritize. Keep a planner and write down what you need to do in order of importance. Do the pertinent things first. Stop pushing things away and saying that you will do them later. Do them when you get them!

Number three; minimize distractions. When you are doing your work turn your phone on 'Do Not Disturb' this way you won't get any small distractions. This is perfect for me because I always worry that I will miss a call from a family member, but since they're on my favorites list the call will come through.

Number four; don't bite off more than you can chew. It is completely okay to say no, or to change your mind about things. School comes first. You are paying a large sum of money to learn and succeed. If you put too much on your plate and find that your grades and/or emotional state are faltering then re-evaluate your responsibilities and figure out how or what you can eliminate in order to increase your success.

Number five; don't be a perfectionist. Chances are that the thing you are worrying about is insignificant. An artist is never satisfied with their work and yet to another person it's a masterpiece. I'm not saying, do the bare minimum, I'm saying do it but don't waste time fretting over it when you have done it to the best of your ability.

Number six; practice self-control. If you know you have a paper due in two days, don't go out and put it off. Start the paper. If you know you have a test soon, make sure you are making time to study for it. Again, your education is the most important factor right now. So, prioritize it.

Hopefully, this will be helpful. I know that from time to time I need a reality check. Keeping yourself in line isn't always easy but it is a great skill to master. Mastering it now will be such a major asset later on in life.

Sidenote: I write everything down. What I don't right down I tend to forget. Now, I just have to find a way to organize my random thoughts.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
