With the 2016 election over and the surprising result in, we got to take a look at the divisions within America. Now, more than any other time in the United States history do we need to embrace and care for each other. We need to embrace these groups and bring them much farther into the fold because fear is running rampant. Fear over rights, family, and protection have gone from the backs of the minds of minorities to a new heartbreaking worry.

We need to be embracing the LGBT community, for they are in a turbulent and heartbreaking state right now. These are people that may or may not be out to family and friends, and this election has only made it harder and more intimidating for them to be out. Although unlikely, they fear the loss of their ability to marry and have the same benefits that opposite-sex marriages have been able to reap. We need to advocate with them to end sexual orientation workplace discrimination. We need to work to end sexual orientation discrimination in the goods and services markets. We need to learn from them. We need to learn that without them being open and comfortable, we lose individuals that make us all grow. Without them, we cannot work to get children out of foster care. These are people that WANT to have families and they deserve, just like everyone else, to have those opportunities.

We need to work with the Muslim community to not only learn about their religion but also work on making them feel welcome. We need to work to end the hateful and incorrect speech many are using to categorize members of this community. They aren’t any different from you or me. We need to work with them to root out militant Islamic extremists. We need to work with them to prevent family tearing disasters from happening, not only caused from members of the Islamic community but our Christian and minority communities as well. We also need to remember all religions are protected under our first amendment and should be respected. If we allow religious differences to cause divides, there is no hope of unifying and healing our great nation.

We need to let minorities know that they are heard. We need to respect that they are feeling pain and feeling targeted just like many members of our blue collar class. These are people that we need to be embrace. Through them, we learn and grow to become better people together. Through them, we can reach new cultures and show the watching world that America is truly the melting pot they think we are. Embracing and even partaking in these cultures shows the world that we can overcome and grow through our differences.

We need to work to grow blue collar jobs, jobs for degree holders, and advanced research/degree jobs. If we truly want to “Make America Great Again” we need to make America great for every person, every level of education, every person regardless of race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, and our environment as well. Working people are the backbone of our nation.

We can do this by tackling two projects at once; putting money into renewable energy research and creating industry jobs producing and maintaining those renewable sources. Although it is costly, it is worth the effort to better our relationship with the environment because, in the end, it doesn’t hurt a soul to be “green.” Even if you deny climate change, you should see no problem investing in the research and manufacturing of renewable and stable energy sources.

Donald wants to “Make America Great Again” and now is the time to make an America that works for every lower, middle, and upper class American. We need to ensure that this happens by working to understand the pains and frustrations that divide our nation while beginning to understand why those pains and frustrations were present in the first place. We need to understand that our history does not determine, but play a role in our path to success and growth. From it we can learn and work to prevent situations from happening again. We are a world leader and need to start acting like one. We don’t have to fall behind Trump and support him fully; but, we MUST make sure that we work together to make this country work for everyone. We cannot let the divisive language from both candidates divide us and cause conflict. This task cannot be done by conservatives alone. We need liberals and moderates to speak with each other to end this. We MUST come together to rebuild our communities and heal to “Make America Great Again.”

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
