Time Is Up: Athletes Band Together Against Sexual Abuse

"I thought that training for the Olympics would be the hardest thing that I would ever have to do. But, in fact, the hardest thing I would ever have to do is process that I am a victim of Larry Nassar." -Jordyn Wieber

Disgusting.

Disgusting is one of many words that can describe the events that have taken place within the USA Gymnastics community. Larry Nassar was the USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, who treated a countless number of athletes.

And recently, a tremendous amount of those athletes are coming forward claiming that Nassar sexually abused them while being treated. Around 160 to be exact, have come forward and are speaking out about their experiences with Larry Nassar, according to The New York Times.

This abuse has been occurring for years and years, but recently it took a number of well-known Olympic athletes to come forward to shine light on this terrible act that has been occurring time and time again. Olympians like Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman. Not only were these Olympians sexually abused, but so were many other girls who play different sports. Swimmers, dancers, rowers, volleyball players and many other athletes of different sports came forward, strong and ready to be heard.

"The army you chose in the late ’90s to silence me, to dismiss me and my attempt at speaking the truth, will not prevail over the army you created when violating us." -softball player, Tiffany Lopez

Since the ‘90s there have been several accounts of abuse from Nassar and since then, all these young girls were silenced. It is so crazy to think that years and years went by and nothing was done to stop this man. Many people did not believe some of these girls when they would discuss their accounts.

“I was attacked on social media. … People didn’t believe me, even people I thought were my friends. They called me a liar, a whore, and even accused me of making all of this up just to get attention.” -Olympic Gold Medalist, Jamie Dantzscher (gymnast)

All of these girls showed great strength and courage being able to come forward and talk about their accounts with Larry Nassar while facing a judge and Larry himself. When watching dozens of girls testify, each one that went on the stand had great words to say about the current situation at hand and give insight about their experiences, but Aly Raisman spoke so strongly about women and having a voice. She was truly a leader and plans on continuing to be. She and many others will not stop until USA Gymnastics, the USA Olympic Committee and Michigan State University get tried over the abuse that has been occurring for years within their facilities.

“Let this sentence strike fear in anyone who thinks it is O.K. to hurt another person. Abusers, your time is up. The survivors are here, standing tall, and we are not going anywhere.” -Olympic Gold Medalist, Aly Raisman (gymnast)

Larry Nassar has been sentenced 40 to 175 years in prison.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
