The end of each year means the beginning of a new one, and most people celebrate this occasion with streamers, party hats, and fireworks. But for some of us, this time of year greets us with a haunting sadness. We have to say a brutal, heart wrenching, painful goodbye around this time of year. A goodbye that hurts more than most.

A goodbye to college football.

Whether your team is still playing at this bittersweet time of year or not doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that the community of athletes and fans across the country are coming together for one last time, singing each fight song one last time, and cheering on the boys of fall one last time.

But then, eight months later, something magical happens. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I’m here today. This magic is infectious and it is truly what gets us through those long spring and summer days. The air begins to have a different aroma, people start smile more frequently, and there’s a feeling of comradeship not often felt.

That magic is the return of college football.

That magic is finally here.

That magic starts this weekend.

The teams have been working hard all summer long to get stronger, faster and more equipped to beat the unbeatable. To show their fans that they are even more capable of victory then they once thought. To huddle up and run out of the smoky tunnel surrounded by thousands and thousands of the screaming people who love them most in the this world.

The return of college football means the return of tailgating, the return of singing your fight song and alma mater at the top of your lungs, and ultimately the return of full life to college campuses nation wide. The return of high-fiving each and every member of the team after the game, win or lose. The return of celebrating the victories and feeling the pain of the losses with each coach, player, student, and parent.

College football season is back, and it’s time to get ready for whirlwind of this weekend. Pre-order the pizza. Go ahead and just put your TV on ESPN to make sure you don’t miss a second of the action. Wear your jersey to class and work all week long. Paint your face. It. Is. Time.

It’s been a long eight months. We survived, we thrived, and the wait is finally over. Don’t take a moment of this incredible season for granted, because in the blink of an eye it’ll be time for the National Championship and another hard goodbye.

Happy college football season, my friends.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
