In the constant day of light, one of the most controversial topics has been about gun control in the United States. A lot of recent incidents have pushed for gun-control laws. Sometimes, prayers are not enough. There has been so many mass shootings across the U.S, yet politicians still won’t fully push for gun control.
Today, June 12th, 2016 should be an eye-opening day for politicians and communities across the nation to push towards change because mass shootings should not be seen constantly in the U.S. Last night, Omar Mateen opened fire at The Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The death toll thus far has been described as fifty dead and fifty-three injured.
POTUS said, “The place where they were attacked was more than nightclub, it was a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness to speak their minds and advocate for their civil rights.” All these people who died in this tragic and heartbreaking event were great human beings who did not deserve to have their lives taken from them. This occurred because some man was legally able to obtain a rifle to be used in a violent form.
As Belissa Esobedo, Rhiannon McGavin, and Zariya Allen stated in their slam poem, “Somewhere in America,’ Now somewhere in America, there is a child holding a copy of “Catcher in the Rye” and there is a child holding a gun But only one of these things have been banned by their state government And it’s not the one that can rip through flesh It’s the one that says “f*** you” on more pages than one.” What this says about our nation is that people would rather ban books that state the most obvious truths than ban weapons which are used in constant states of violence.
To those from the LGBTQ+ community, and any other community that has been haunted by a mass shooting, I stand with you and as a citizen of the United States, will vote for people who will push for gun control, no human deserves to have their life taken away.
