If you’re like me, you have been “drippin in finesse” with Bruno Mars ever since he released the music video. It’s not a surprise that this song became so popular, but what a lot of people do not realize is the reason behind the song’s achievements. The reason why the song is a huge hit isn’t just because Bruno Mars is a musical genius, and it isn’t because Cardi B brings a certain style and swag to the song. The reason why it’s a large success is because the song and video give the listener a vibe and feeling that a lot of music today does not create. “Finesse” is all about the late 80s and early 90s, which for me, is one of the best times in music history. Watching Bruno Mars pay tribute to the 90s show “In Living Color,” while he and his crew are killing it with crisp dance moves to a funky beat, really makes this song incredible.
I have been waiting for the music of today to go back to some earlier sounds in music history, and this song definitely does that. I think that now is a great time to recreate these kinds of instrumentals and sounds, especially when most of the music today focuses on a pop or trap sound. Don’t get me wrong, I love the music of today and I do enjoy listening to all kinds of music, but nothing can replace this feeling. Songs like “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown just make you want to go out and dance, and a lot of times, I don’t get that feeling with music today. Bruno Mars’ album “24K Magic” is really an album that pays tributes to earlier instrumentals in music history. “Perm” gives you a James Brown vibe, “Chunky” is funky (unintended rhyme), and all of his other songs on the album are great as well.
I think that after all of the success that this album has received, we are going to see a change in music. We’re going to see more artists making old school songs that just make you want to get up and dance. One thing about the music industry is that when a type of song is popular, everyone will make the same kind of song. It’s hard to find artists that are willing to take chances and try things out. I’m sure that Mars had no idea whether this album would be a huge success. The songs are considerably different from his earlier hits like “Grenade,” and “Locked Out of Heaven,” but what’s great about him is that he did not care. He wanted to make this album with this kind of sound and style because this is the kind of music that he wanted to hear, and I think that the general consensus is that we all want to hear more music like this too.
It’ll be interesting to see what Mars decides to do on his next album, but I think it’s safe to say, that it will definitely be a hit.
