This weekend, President Trump tweeted that he would take action as of Saturday to ban the popular app, Tiktok, due to the app's affiliation with China. Tiktok is a video app where content creators can make 1-minute videos to post on their platform. Tiktok is popular within the millennial/gen-z community and has been at the center of conversation in the past month.
President Trump had recently tweeted about banning the app and the public was told that they were looking into banning any apps owned by Chinese companies in fear of spying. Content creators immediately began to talk about their other platforms and began preparing for the end of the popular app, just as they did when Vine was shut down. Charli Damelio, a dancer who gained fame on the app, began pushing her youtube/vlog channel and started looking at other outlets for her career other than TikTok. Many have moved to post videos on Instagram. While this might not seem like a big deal to an older generation, a lot of these kids on the app make their income from videos they post. Losing their platform could mean not being able to pay the bills.
It is rumored that the President is banning the app due to the massive prank that was pulled on his campaign rally in Tulsa. Trump made his tickets free and available to buy online. When a member of Gen-Z caught wind of this and decided to buy a bunch of tickets and now show up. There are photos of the rally where the crowd looks almost empty. This is all just speculation, but it was confirmed that the president was not happy with the prank pulled on him.
Tiktok has been in talks with Microsoft so they can officially be an American affiliated company. Let us hope for the enjoyment of many teenagers that the app will continue to be able to use in the country!
