I have been diving my nose into books since I was first able to understand the printed words on their pages.
To this day, I do not let most people near my bookshelf, let alone leaf through my books. When I see a book of any sort, it is almost natural for me to pick it up and look through the bound covers. I sometimes do not understand why I am into books so much. I do know, however, the reasons for my love of reading, and it is because they let me escape into other worlds, meet new characters, and most of all, books help me to understand the meaning of our own world better.
A good book will always capture my emotions the way a dramatic movie will capture an audience. I feel as if I am drawn into the pages, becoming part of the world it holds together. When I feel depressed or angry I look to books for comfort. They help me to forget what I was upset about and focus my attention to the characters and their conflicts rather than my own.
Books give people something to talk about, like TV shows or some other form of media, hence one of the reasons why we read books as an assignment for English class. They generate discussions in which people can express their opinions about the book that will often lead to disagreement, which in turn makes the discussion all the more interesting. Books then can suddenly become interesting, even to people who do not like to read. One of the reasons why I enjoy reading books so much is because of these discussions that I would be able to have after reading.
I often look for a theme when I watch a movie or listen to music, and the same goes for books. A good book, by my definition, has an interesting story, characters, plot, and a message that I can either relate to or even put to use in my daily life. Books help me to think and act smarter with the messages they try to convey through their stories.
Even if a book does not necessarily have a theme, it still shows the characters’ conflicts and the choices they make, which makes me wonder what I would do if I were to end up in a situation like theirs. This makes me a better problem solver, I think, especially when there is a problem that I have to face that a character I’ve read about has already gone through. Speaking of such, books also make me feel thankful that I do not have to go through what some characters are forced to face, like losing their families or having to fight a dragon.
Books must be of some use to us, otherwise they would have been wiped out after so many thousands upon thousands of years in existence. They are used to obtain information, like encyclopedias and dictionaries. For me, books provide essential tools my mind can use to increase the way I think about certain things I shall soon have to come across in my life. The larger my vocabulary, the more professional I will seem once I start to apply for jobs. Even in writing essays like this, by using an extensive and capacious vocabulary, I would get a higher grade (and that is hopefully the case). Books are helpful to me and my future, and that is yet another reason atop the other million of why I read.
Books are fascinating creatures. They are an implement of entertainment and information. Without books, my mind would be full of nothing but blank space. Stories were the first things to blossom the idea of imagination. These are all reasons why I am one of the billions of readers on this planet. I do not know where I would be today without being able to discover a whole other world within the pages of two bound covers.
