3 Things That When You Start A New Netflix Show

Two words: Grey’s Anatomy. It’s all I can think about, talk about, dream about, and the only thing worthy of my free time nowadays. All it takes is one episode for my life to become about surgery’s and scandals. As you can see, starting a new Netflix show is like starting a new relationship. The show becomes your best friend, favorite activity, and biggest distraction from the real world. I love a good Netflix series just as much as the next person, however, due to its strong addiction, getting hooked can be a slippery slope. Here are five things that happen after one begins to dedicate their life to the world of Netflix.

1. Before you know it, one episode turns into two, then three, then ten.

“I’m just watching one episode” is what people tell themselves after settling down on the couch, a buttery bowl of popcorn in lap. However, before you know it, you’re halfway through season five and have been sitting in the same place for six hours. Because the next episode appears on the screen ten seconds after you finish the previous one, it’s almost impossible to shut your computer off and walk away. It's easy to lose track of time and your surroundings as the show sucks you right in. For those few hours, the storyline becomes your reality.

2. What? We had homework?

Ahh, the dreaded word. Homework. With a new semester comes new classes, new teachers, and new assignments. After a long break, well short for Michigan students, we forget how to balance a college course load with the craziness of life. Throw a new Netflix series into the mix? Be careful, because that can get tricky. Although it’s hard to resist the temptation to watch TV all day every day in your dorm room, don’t neglect that psychology homework you know is due tomorrow. Instead of staying in your room, go to the library and turn off your computer to do work. Your show isn’t going anywhere!

3. Your bed becomes your best friend.

When there’s a drama filled episode for you to watch and cozy blankets to curl up in, what’s the incentive to leave? It’s easy for Netflix to become the basis of your new social life. The more invested you become in a show, the lazier you feel. However, don’t let it take over your life! Although Netflix is a form of entertainment people just can’t live without, don’t forget that the real world is still out there, and it’s way more fun :).

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
