Three Things You Need in Life

Human nature entails the desire and urge to want, want, want. We can have it all and still feel unsatisfied. We can feel satisfied with all the things we have, but really, how long does that last until we're back looking for the next best phone, book, movie, computer? This semester, and year really, has been nothing short of a challenge. With that challenge has come exhaustion, stress, loved ones falling ill and people I never dreamed of leaving, walking out. However, the challenge has also brought growth and a newfound realization that despite all the things that we want in life, there are really only three things we need at this time of our lives.

1. Positivity.

Truly, there is nothing more we need in this world than to radiate and surround ourselves with positivity. When you're positive, you can do most anything because you're uplifted and motivated. This doesn't mean that you don't get upset or sad about things, but it means you don't let things get you down or in your way. You know that the best way to live life is feeling positive and to look on the brighter side of things. Positivity gives you strength and you absorb as much of it as possible.

2. Block negativity.

With being positive and keeping positivity in your life, means blocking out the negative road blocks that always make their way. Sure, some negative things can be great life lessons, but that's all they should be. Being positive doesn't mean that you're immune to negative things in life, it just means you know how to handle them when they do come along. That also doesn't mean that you dodge them completely either, only that when a bad time calls, you know how to hang up the phone with confidence. Negative things can happen to you, but you deal with them and you continue to be the positive person you were, but now you've been given another opportunity to learn and grow stronger. It's all about the head game.

3. Focus.

To be the positive soul that you know you are, it requires dedication and ultimate focus. Focus on your goals, where you to want to be in life; who you want to be. Being positive and strong means mentally checking yourself and seeing where you're at, but not letting it get you down if you're not quite where you want to be. A lack of focus invites an overwhelming amount of stress and negativity to build up and enter your life, and before you know it, you've got a pile of stress that's hard to shake. Being positive doesn't mean you need to go all Karate Kid, but it does mean taking the time to see where you're at and where you want to go. Focus means having the drive to not let go of your goals, whether they are emotional, mental, financial or physical ones. You have the determination that no matter what comes your way, you will not let it tear you down. You will only become a stronger, more well-rounded, much more positive person in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
