Since the 1900s, the world has truly come far. We have achieved more equality for everyone despite their race, gender, and ethnicity. When we look at the big picture we are happy but if we really look at the details there is a lot of work that still needs to be done, ESPECIALLY in sexism for men and women. So what can we do to make a difference? These three easy steps:
Step one to any problem is addressing that there is, in fact, a problem. If we as a whole country realize that sexism still exists in our everyday lives we can start brain storming ideas along with solutions. For example, if you acknowledge sexism in your life and call out the people encouraging those sexist behaviors, those people can start to see they need a change in the way they treat or act towards others.
What do I mean by sexist behaviors? Here are just a few of some common sexist behaviors in everyday life:
Talking over or cutting off someone due to the fact that they are a man/woman because they would not know the answer or their opinion would be irrelevant.
Assuming a woman is a "stay-home mom" and a man is a "working father".
Telling a woman/man they need to look a certain way because of their gender.
When a woman is in a bad mood asking her if she is on her period when in fact she most likely is not.
Treating a worker of lower level poorly due to the fact they are a man/woman.
Making or suggesting sexual comments due to someone's gender and possibly acting upon them (which is sexual harassment and assault).
(The list could go on for pages)
Step two is changing the behaviors in everyday life. Whether you are the victim in a sexist encounter or the one displaying sexism, change how you react.
Victims should fight back and defeat any stereotypes or degrading comments. Those who tend to be sexist, listen and try to erase pre-knowledge that may have an effect on the way you treat others. Also if you are a third person witnessing an encounter that is sexist, step in if you feel necessary and defend the victim.
Step three is the most simple: STOP BEING SEXIST AND LOVE EVERYONE. This may sound like a complicated concept for most but hey, it's 2017 and it's time we stop letting history repeat itself and treat everyone with equality.
Just because we say we have liberty and justice for all does not mean that we actually do. So instead of letting prior knowledge or typical stereotypes define someone, let's allow THEM to define THEMSELEVES. I promise it's really not that hard.
There you have it, three easy steps to stop an issue we face every day. If we as a whole country can focus and change this issue the world will not only be a better place but we will actually stand true to what we pledge is true in our constitution. Because...
